PLAXTON, Norma Ann (Nan) (nee VICQ)

September 2, 1934 – Regina Saskatchewan
December 16, 2018 – Calgary Alberta

Norma Ann (Nan) Plaxton of Calgary passed away peacefully on Sunday December 16th at the age of 84 years.

Nan is survived by Gordon, her husband of sixty years; daughters Brenda Plaxton and Shari (David) Buchan; and grandsons Brian (Marian) Buchan and John (Renee) Buchan; as well as sister Betty Tompkins; brother Jack (Sylvia) Vicq; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Nan was born in Regina, SK, and grew up there, and in North Battleford. She moved to Saskatoon to attend the University of Saskatchewan in 1953. There she graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Home Economics, and met and married the love of her life, Gordon. Nan and Gordon moved to Calgary where Nan initially focused on looking after her two daughters. She later worked for the Calgary Board of Education as a school aid, and volunteered in the community.

Her free time was spent pursuing her favorite activities with family and friends: gardening, cooking, camping and hiking in the mountains. She enjoyed spending time with her grandsons, and imparted countless valuable life lessons to them. One of Nan’s most-cherished activities was spending summers at their cabin at Waskesiu Lake, Prince Albert National Park, SK. She loved to canoe, walk the beaches and the trails, and listen for the call of the loon. Nan also had an adventurous spirit, and she and Gordon travelled extensively, both within Canada and abroad.

Nan will be remembered for her generosity, gentle strength, and kind heart. She always had a welcoming home, a delicious meal to share, and a genuine concern for all she knew and met. In her gracious and unassuming way, Nan had the ability to reach out and care for those she encountered; with a genuine smile, a perfectly worded card or letter, or an offer of help when needed.

Kindnesses were returned to her, and to her family, during the last days of her life. The family is deeply grateful for the skilled and compassionate care provide by the staff at Foothills Medical Centre Special Services Unit 36 during Nan’s final days.

A service to commemorate and celebrate her life will be held at Wild Rose United Church (1317 1st St NW, Calgary, AB) on Saturday January 12, 2019 at 1:00 p.m. Light lunch to follow. For those who wish, memorial tributes may be made to the Wild Rose United Church Foundation, 1317 1st St NW, Calgary, AB, T2M 2S5, Telephone: (403) 277-5576, wildroseunited.ca, or Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada-Alberta division, 200, 119 – 14th Street N.W., Calgary, AB T2N 1Z6 Telephone: (403) 264-5549, www.heartandstroke.ca.

Condolences can be forwarded to the family through www.mcinnisholloway.com. In living memory of Nan Plaxton, a tree will be planted in Fish Creek Provincial Park.

  11. Valerie and Dale Blomquist (Ofstie)

    Dear Gord and family
Our sincere condolences on the passing of Nan. We so fondly remember our times at the Ofstie cabin in Waskesiu, out in the camp kitchen where each of our cabins had their own table! No one was more pleasant, than Nan! She was so sincere, kind, smiling and such a gentle soul! I forwarded the obituary to Kerry and Marilyn who still spend most of their summers up there in the new “Ofstie”cabin. They knew of her health issues but were very saddened to hear of her passing. Even our children ( of course grown with children of their own) remembered her as a beautiful person when they saw her picture, and had fond memories of her. We planned to be at her service but those plans changed when my oldest brother became ill. Our thoughts and prayers are with you!
