PINCH, John (Jack) Richard

September 9, 1961 – Oshawa, Ontario
September 22, 2017 – Calgary, Alberta

John (Jack) Richard Pinch of Calgary, Alberta passed away on Friday, September 22, 2017 at the age of 56 years.

Jack was originally from Bowmanville, Ontario and is still known as a legend and the epitome of cool in the Durham Region. He moved to Calgary as a young adult along with a group of his dearest friends and worked for the City of Calgary until his retirement. Jack had a tough exterior, but he also had a softer side known well to those he was closest to. Jack loved music and he loved to laugh; he could often be heard singing popular songs to which he set his own special set of lyrics. He also loved to hunt and fish and was especially proud of being named Alberta Outdoorsmen’s Walleye Champion of 2006. Jack was truly in his element whenever he was communing with nature and often stated it was at those times when he felt closest to God. And so, it is to nature and to God that he has returned. Jack was preceded in death by his father, Jack Lewis Pinch.

Jack is survived by his mother; Catherine Ann Pinch; his son, Jonathan, his sisters; Susan and Lori Pinch; his nieces, Jacqueline O’Rourke and Rebecca Pinch; his nephew, Jorden Pinch, many aunts, uncles, and cousins as well as numerous friends.

  2. Many times when people hear my name, they will still say, “You must be Jackie Pinch’s little sister? Man, your brother was the coolest and a really tough SOB!” This reaction always seems to be followed by an incredible Jack adventure story that would normally seem impossible, but because Jack was involved, you knew it could quite possibly be true. I have to say, whenever I come away from one of these interactions, I can’t help but feel a sense of pride, just for being Jackie Pinch’s little sister. Jack gave me my first grown up record album, The Beatles “White Album” for Christmas one year. We used to like to listen to it together and he would dance around in his briefs and sing along. It’s still my favourite album of all-time. In later years, we bonded over our shared love of “It’s A Wonderful Life” and would spend many Christmas Eves on the phone to one another while watching, doing our best Jimmy Stewart impersonations. I’m going to miss that this Christmas. I can only hope that, wherever my big brother is, he has found boundless joy and bliss. I’d like to think that, for him, Heaven is an endless series of mountains, streams, and forests, just waiting for him to discover them. I’d also like to hope that we will meet again someday so we can say the things that were left unsaid for reasons that don’t matter anymore. I love you, Jack…be well…take care of my Hossy for me, k?

  3. Jack, I hope you know you were loved by a great many people. You have a lot of very good, kind-hearted, and giving friends; even those who weren’t in touch with you for many years, were still watching over you the entire time. And then there are your friends whom I’ve never met who have been very good with me during this difficult time. I want to thank each and every one of your friends for their help and their great kindness. You were a very lucky man to be so loved and cherished, even now.

I love you, son; I always did and I always will. I miss you terribly. I can’t stop thinking about you; I even dream about you. Goodness knows, we had our difficulties, but you were always and always will be my beloved son. I hope things are better where you are now.

  5. When I first got to know these crazy Oshawa boys I was so enthralled to sit and listen to Al & Jack tell me stories of what they did, and got away with back in the day. I was honoured to have had the joy of knowing you ‘one punch’ ‘mad Jack’ ‘Uncle Jack’
I am sharing in the great sense of grief with all that knew & loved that bear of a man, but I must say I’m so ever greatful that I also knew the teddy bear that was on his soft side.
My daughter still remembers her ‘Uncle Jack’ as still calls him ‘taking off her nose’ when he came into our lives when she was only 3, 21 years ago.
I’m very proud to have know such a wonderful man, first as ‘Miss Cheryl’ and later as ‘Mrs Berlino’ as he’d say whenever he called…I always knew when it was you Jack, I’m really going to miss you.
Heartfelt condolences & prayers to his precious Mother, sisters and family.
