PILLING, Bernice Georgena

January 17, 1930 – Inglewood, Ontario
March 10, 2018 – Calgary, Alberta

Bernice Georgena Pilling – full of Life, full of Love, passed from this world to the next on March 10, 2018 at the age off 88 years.

Bernice had a very active ministry within the Anglican Church. Together with her husband, John, they lived and shared their faith in all three Prairie Provinces. From her home in Regina in the 1970’s, she ran the Sunday School Program, ‘Sunday School by Post’ which served the remote farming communities of the prairies. In Calgary she taught English as a second language and helped build some critical programs for new immigrants. A Calgarian for the last thirty-seven years, Bernice had a spark and vitality that amazed all who knew her. As many said – she was a force to be reckoned with! She loved travel and was always up for an adventure.

Bernice was the much-loved wife of the late John Turton Pilling and mom of David, Anne and Mary. Second mom of Maureen, Wendy, (David), John (Anne) and Brian (Mary); Nana to Madeline (Tom), Matthew (Serena), James, Eveline (Jay), Ben (Kahla), Christina (Shane), Jack (Lauren) and Bre (Sean); and Grandma to Treena, Callan and Bill. Grandma GG to Jordan. GG to Georgena and baby bump.

She will be welcomed home by her husband John; parents George and Ena; and her brother Ken. Well lived, thou good and faithful servant.

Funeral Services will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY (Park Memorial, 5008 Elbow Drive S.W. Calgary, AB) on Wednesday, March 14, 2018 at 10:00 a.m. Condolences may be forwarded through

  1. The Reverend Axford :

For over 40 years I have knwn the Jaggs Family. Since 2001 I have shared ministry with John. I believe Bernice should have been the priest but that was eons ago. My love to all who knew her. I am shedding a tear and rejoicing with my remembrances.

But hey she was sometimes better with prayers than I

I am so sorry to hear of Bernice’s passing. I work at Amica at Aspen Woods and I loved Bernice dearly. I always enjoyed stopping by her suite while on my security rounds from time to time at night to visit with her and her cats. She even helped me find the right cat food to help with my cat, Willow’s dental issues. Bernice was always so kind to me when she would stop by the Concierge Desk. I will miss her very much. Please know that you all are in my thoughts and prayers over this difficult time in your lives.

  3. Cathy Fulton :

I knew both of your folks well through many a ministry in the Diocese of Calgary.
When John passed the Archival torch to Bernice, she took me under wing to train me on some of the fun to be had up at Special Collections at the U of C. especially when a search went stale.
I think of her every time I go up to the University &’I will remember her as a wise & passionate friend & mentor on my journey.

  4. My deepest sympathies to all of the family and friends who loved Bernice. Bernice frequently came to me with great ideas for our residents at Amica at Aspen Woods. She was eager to participate in all activities and her Halloween costumes were always extraordinary. She was so creative and had a delightful sense of humour. Her passion for life was evident and it was a joy getting to know her over the past few years. She will be sorely missed in our community.

  7. Cheryl and Brian Johnston :

My first encounter with Bernice was at Anglican church camp at Clear Lake, MB where I was a young camper and Bernice a counsellor. From that first encounter, I remember her skill as a leader and her sense of fun. Years later, we got to know Bernice and John at St. Andrews in Calgary. They were an important part of our daughters’ childhood and our family life. Our deepest sympathies to all of the family.

  8. the Rt. Rev. Derek Hoskin :

It is with a sense of sadness and joy that I received the news of Bernice’s death. Sadness because Bernice was a good-humoured dedicated volunteer who helped the Diocese find answers to the archival questions which arrived at the Synod Office during my time as Bishop. Joy because Bernice lived her life in the service of others, walking in the foot-steps of her Saviour and Friend, Jesus Christ. May light perpetual shine upon her, and the love of Christ comfort her family and friends.
