August 13, 2018 – San Pedro, Laguna, Philippines
Isidro (Sid) Oliver Pili of Calgary, AB, passed away peacefully in his sleep in San Pedro, Laguna, Philippines on Monday, August 13, 2018 at the age of 85 years.
Family – and Sid’s role of brother, husband, father, and grandfather – was most important to him, and remains his most precious and lasting legacy. Quiet and unassuming, Sid was devoted and loyal to those close to him. He quietly helped countless people, was steadfast, principled, thoughtful, and generous, and many will attest that he lived his life with character, integrity, grit, and grace. He was well respected, admired, and greatly loved, and thus we find it difficult to say goodbye. In 1976, Sid left his successful private architecture business and senior position at Meralco in the Philippines to relocate his family to Calgary, where he formed enduring ties with the ex-Meralco and Filipino community in the city. Sid was a devout Catholic and a member of the church choir for over forty years at St. Marks and Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
In retirement, Sid & Nena traveled extensively around the world – his trips with his family were his favourites. He helped Nena fulfill her lifelong dream of opening a school, where he designed and oversaw the construction of Little Explorers Montessori School in San Pedro that opened in 2003. He renewed his passion for painting and created several murals and watercolour pieces that grace the school and his home. With Nena, Sid spent his time living between Calgary and San Pedro, and enjoyed connecting with family and friends and the graces that living in different cities bestows. In the last few years of his life, he was profoundly happy, content, and at peace.
Sid will be deeply missed by his family and friends. He is survived by his wife of fifty-two years Nenita (Nena) Pili (nee Alinsod), and his children, Ismael (Teresa), Irvin (Simonette), and Nini (John Hynds). He was fiercely proud of his family, especially his four grandsons, Sydney and Christian Pili and John and Noah Hynds. He was predeceased by his older brother and sister, Raphael and Carmen, and is survived by his siblings, Guillermo, Asuncion, Pacencia, and Virgilio.
Memorial Mass and celebration of life will be held at Sacred Heart Catholic Church (1307 – 14th Street S.W., Calgary, AB) on Wednesday, October 17, 2018 at 10:00 a.m. Reception to follow at Sacred Heart. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.
