PICKARD, Glenn Alex

August 23, 1944 – Oshawa, Ontario
December 17, 2018 – Calgary, Alberta

Glenn Alex Pickard was born August 23, 1944 in Oshawa, Ontario, the son of David and Muriel Pickard and elder brother to Joanne, Jim and Trudy. He is fondly remembered by family as an optimistic futurist; a curious mind with a deep passion for science and the emergent high-technologies of the early computer and space ages spanning his teen years eventually leading him to complete a degree in Mathematics. Graduating from the University of Alberta in 1967, Glenn soon found his place in the new world of information and communications technology, employed as a Software Systems Analyst working with mainframe computers.

The following year would see the first manned flight to space, little more than a decade after the launch of Sputnik.

Glenn took great pride in his work as participant in developing communications technologies at Alberta Government Telephones (AGT), and throughout the company’s early days of transition from a crown corporation to its publicly traded successor, TELUS.

Glenn was generous with his time, talents and possessions. He was a kind man to all who met him. Reserved in temperament, he was not one to impose himself, but was always the warm and receptive host to his friends and familiars. He was inclusive, and made room for others. A habitual bookworm, Glenn delighted in any opportunity to share his passion for scientific discovery and the excitement of his own knowledge, but was just as happy to share in a hockey game or a walk in the countryside.

This spirit of generosity and enthusiasm for sharing were most certainly elemental in his decision to join the “Uncles At Large” program in 1979, becoming mentor to a young boy of 7 years, estranged to his father by circumstance.

And so they became good friends. Sharing in fishing, camping, and computers. Sharing in the wonder of the world. Sharing in love.

In time, this friendship grew. It grew beyond any expectation. It grew to include not only this boy, but his brother, his sister, and his mother.

Glenn took Margaret’s hand in marriage in the winter of 1981. And so they became a family.

He became a grandfather to two more. And he loved them both, dearly.

Glenn passed away peacefully on Dec 17, 2018 at 2:15 AM at Bethany Riverview Village in Calgary. He is survived by his wife Margaret, children; Brad, Michael, Lori-Anne Altiok; grandchildren Ceyda-Anne and Kaya; his sisters, Joanne Petersen, Trudy Pickard, and brother; Jim.

Rest in Peace, Dad.

With Great Love,

Your Family
