January 31, 1925 – Musidora, Alberta
June 17, 2019 – Calgary, Alberta

God blessed Dad with 94 1/2 years of robust health with family, friends and career even though he was aiming for a minimum of 100. It is therefore with deep sadness we announce the premature passing of Walter Phillips.

Walter was born in the farmhouse at Musidora and grew up in Beauvallon, AB. He started farming in Minburn but then decided to return to school with his young and growing family. He obtained his Bachelor of Science degree followed by his Doctor of Optometry 1957 from Pacific University, Oregon. He started his optometric career in Red Deer and then moved the family to Calgary and shortly thereafter, launched his first practice. He continued in private practice for roughly fifty years while also having Optometric practices in Carstairs, Bowness, Invermere, BC and Golden, BC and Olds in the “retirement years”. He retired in 2005 at the age of eighty years and didn’t care much for leisure. He was back working six months later. Dad was ambitious and always exploring new challenges and opportunities. We took many family vacations to many amazing countries and locations. He continued his interest in cattle farming through his company, Boventure Farms in Lacombe where we kids spent much of our early years exploring Dad’s first passion, the outdoors and farming. Dad always enjoyed going to other farms in Canada, Europe and US to learn more about the breeding and sourcing of purebred Charolais, Limousine and Simmental cattle, their lineage, and inspired others to pursue his interest and this opportunity. It was important to Dad that his children develop life skills and independence. He accomplished this by showing us how to fix things and problem-solve. His love of learning was shared through bird watching, trees, animals and his love of cars and airplanes. He always encouraged and supported all education.

Walter is survived by his sister Valerie Walker, wife Iola Phillips, four sons and two daughters, Terry (Carolyn), Randy, Lindsay, Ora-Lee (Peter Kenney), Darren (Tracey) and Correna; two grandsons, Preston (Crystal) and Spencer; and two granddaughters, Telisa (Matthew Bennett) and Erienne; as well as three great-grandsons and one great-granddaughter. He was predeceased by his daughter Shelley, and brothers, Russell, Victor and Hank.

A Celebration of Walter’s Life will be held at Calgary Central Seventh-Day Adventist Church (1920 – 13 Ave. NW) on Monday, July 8 at 2:00 pm. Messages of condolence may be left for the family through

In living memory of Walter Phillips, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Crowfoot, 82 CROWFOOT CIRCLE NW, CALGARY, AB T3G 2T3, Telephone: 403-241-0044.
