PETROW, Mervin

June 17, 1936 – Theodore, Saskatchewan
May 13, 2018 – Airdrie, Alberta

It is with heavy hearts, the family of Mervin “Merv” Petrow announce his passing on Sunday, May 13th, 2018 after a courageous battle with cancer at the age of 81 years. Merv passed peacefully, surround by love at his home. His wish was to be cremated.

Merv was “Born to be a farmer” – the fourth of five children born to Stephan and Julia at Theodore, Saskatchewan where he was raised in their self-built log/ straw home. He attended High School in Yorkton, living with his sister during that time.

His first job was with the railway, then the Telephone Line – then moving to Regina where he worked at the Refinery. He stayed true to his calling and would return home by bus to help his dad at the farm whenever possible.

While living in Regina, he met and fell in love with Marlene. After their engagement he moved to Saskatoon and made that their home until 2017.

As newlyweds, Marlene and Merv quickly invested in land and they “suitcase” farmed until his failing health forced him to retire. Merv and Marlene were married for almost 58 years and even though they worked at three jobs, they did take the time to raise two children and then enjoy many years of winter vacations either travelling the world or spending their time with their many friends in the sunny south!

After retiring from the Research Council, Merv took up a new career that lasted 32 years in Real Estate which he enjoyed as it enabled him to meet and make many new friends.

Merv was an avid sports fan, especially devoted to the Saskatchewan Roughriders, never missing a game, if he could help it. He enjoyed simple things and made fast friends with everyone he met.

Merv is survived by his beloved wife Marlene; his son Trevor (Tina); his daughter Karen; his grandchildren Tyler, Ryan, Brooke and Julianna; his sister Ollie (Bud); his brother Steve (Mary); extended family Nick and Nadiya; his pets Mandy and Rascal and many nieces and nephews from his surviving and deceased siblings.

Merv was predeceased by his parents Stephan and Julia; his brothers Bill (Jean) and Emil (Helen); and his nephews Barry and Walter.

A Celebration of Life will be held later this summer in Saskatoon when arrangements are finalized. Condolences may be forwarded through We would like to thank the Oncologists and Staff at the Tom Baker Cancer Clinic, as well as Dr. Michelle Paradis, our Family Physician in Airdrie who took exceptional interest in Merv and made “house calls” when he was no longer strong enough to attend her office. Our thanks also, to McInnis and Holloway Funeral Home who looked after his cremation.

In living memory of Merv Petrow, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Airdrie, 300 TOWERLANE DRIVE, AIRDRIE, AB. Telephone: 403-948-1100.
