PERRY, Dr. Robert Matthew

May 27, 1929 – Calgary, Alberta
December 22, 2018 – Calgary, Alberta

It is with great fondness that we remember our Dad, Bob Perry. He passed peacefully at home in Calgary on the evening of Saturday, December 22, 2018 at the age of 89 years, resting in his favorite chair with his loyal cat Foxy by his side.

A true Calgarian, Bob felt at home both on the prairies and in the mountains. Watching Canada geese land on the Elbow River from his apartment balcony was his favorite pastime in his later years.

Bob was the youngest son of Matthew Perry and Vera Sobey. He grew up in the district of Connaught and graduated from Western Canada High School in 1947. Bob then attended the University of Alberta, where he was a member of the Canadian Officers’ Training Corps. He completed his Doctor of Dental Surgery there in 1953. That year, Bob married Patricia Anne Paterson in Wetaskiwin, AB. Bob and Pat then spent two years in Toronto, where Bob earned his MSc in Orthodontics before establishing a practice in Calgary. Only the third orthodontist in the city, Bob was respected in the dental community for his professionalism, work ethic, and sense of humor. In the sixties, Bob was a Major in the Royal Canadian Dental Corps. He served as the President of the Calgary Dental Society in 1972, and was a Councillor and Examiner with the Royal College of Dentists for much of his career.

Bob was a natural entertainer, often contributing to the Junior League and Rotary Club annual variety shows. His most notable roles included Snow White, A Chorus Girl, and “The Man With the Invisible Dog.” Bob instilled his love for music in several of his grandchildren. He played drums in the dental band, the Holey Molars, which often performed at The Hudson’s Bay Company’s Breakfast with Santa.

A passionate sportsman, Bob was an avid hunter, skier, hockey player, golfer, curler, and tennis player. He played high school and university football, was a halfback for the West End Tornadoes and was a lifelong fan of the Calgary Stampeders. Bob held memberships at the Glencoe Club and the Earl Grey Golf Club, where he got a hole-in-one in the early 2000s. In 1961, Bob and Pat purchased a cottage in southeastern B.C. where the extended Perry family have enjoyed their summer holidays ever since. Together, Bob and his neighbours constructed a par-three golf course at Premier Lake, where Bob frequently organized golf tournaments and introduced his family to his beloved game.

Bob and his wife spent sixty-five loving, adventure-filled years together until Pat moved into assisted living in 2017. Pat and Bob’s three children grew up in a happy home on 8th Street filled with music, laughter, and plenty of dogs and cats.

Bob will be dearly missed by his wife Patricia, his children, Susan (Brad Fox), Richard (Laura Perry) and Pamela (John Partyka); his grandchildren, Graham and Hilary Fox (Philip Horan), Ian, James and Georgia Perry, Andrew Partyka; and his great-granddaughter Penelope Fox Horan.

He was predeceased by his brother, William Cowan Perry in 2008.

A Celebration of Bob’s life will be held at Earl Grey Golf Club (6540 20 ST S.W., Calgary, AB) on Friday, January 11, 2019 at 3:00 p.m. Please forward condolences to McInnes & Holloway www.mcinnisandholloway.com.
