PENNER, Mina Agnes

March 31, 2004 – Calgary, Alberta
February 5, 2019 – Calgary, Alberta

Mina Penner of Calgary passed away on Tuesday, February 5, 2019 at the age of 14 years.

Mina was born at the Rockyview Hospital in Calgary. She of course was an adorable baby! You will never see a fuller head of hair on a newborn than you did on Mina. At birth, her hair was 10 cm long, sticking straight up!

As a toddler, her favorite book was “Brown Bear Brown Bear What do you See?”. She had it memorised, and would read it regularly to her Mom and Dad. This passion for reading continued through her life.

She was a great cook and baker! Her favorite meal to make was pasta. She would regularly let her Mom and Dad know when we were short on white wine or seafood, because those were key ingredients in her world famous seafood pasta. She had a dream to go to Italy and eat true Italian pasta. And she lived that dream.

Mina was very artistic. She completed her grade 10 piano, and also played the flute and saxophone. Her artwork was profound, and she expressed herself deeply through it.

Mina was caring and thoughtful of others. On birthdays and anniversaries, she would write poems and thoughtful letters to people. She took exquisite care of the pets she had when she was young.

Mina excelled at everything she set her mind to. She meticulously researched material for school projects and assignments. She would stay up late into the night to make sure that they were completed to her satisfaction. No detail was too small to overlook. She was a leader.

Mina leaves behind parents, a brother, grandparents, uncles, aunts, cousins, friends and others who are simply devastated by this loss. She may never fully understand how much she meant to so many people.

Mina was a kind, intelligent, beautiful, compassionate, confident, purposeful, yet fragile soul who is loved and cherished.

Funeral Services will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY (Fish Creek, 14441 Bannister Road S.E., Calgary, AB) on Tuesday, February 12, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. Reception to follow in the Hospitality Centre at the Funeral Home. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.

In living memory of Mina Penner, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Fish Creek, 14441 Bannister Road S.E., Calgary, AB, T2X 3J3, Telephone: 403-256-9575.

  3. To Mina’s loved ones, I know you have no idea who I am but your daughter was a beautiful person, she was in my grade 7 class and although we barley spoke to each other she was one of the kindest and smartest people in that class, I really do mean it.
I am incredibly sorry for your loss and it breaks my heart that people have to go through this. I knew very little about her but she was very well loved and known at our school.
I wish the best for her family moving forward.

  5. Mina was a beloved classmate and friend of mine, she was unbelievably smart and beautiful minded. I enjoyed every minute of class with her and it’s surreal I won’t see her bright smile or see her sit in the desk across from mine anymore. My deepest condolences to family and friends.

I was once close with Mina in elementary and I remember her as a beautiful sweet kind hearted girl. She was so talented in so many ways, an amazing artist and a super smart girl. In elementary I remember her playing a video of her on the piano to the class and it was so beautiful. She was so talented and so bright. Always helped students out in class with her skills of understanding all of the work. I am so sorry for your passing. Please know she was so loved by so many people.

Her smile was so contagious and always made me smile. She was beautiful inside and out. I remember one time she tried to teach me how to draw something really basic and whenever I messed up she’s just laugh and help me.
There is no words to describe the impact she had on people. She was truly a good person

Mina and I were friends in elementary and I will forever remember her kindness and how outgoing she was. I would love to say she was gifted but I know how hard she worked for everything. I remember her always giving her 120% in any project, even if it wasn’t just a small doodle. I admired how smart she was, always getting 90’s in her classes. I won’t forget her piano skills. Anytime we walked past a piano she automatically wanted to play it. Showing us what she recently learnt. I am so sorry for your loss, just know she’ll forever be missed by everyone

  25. I am a Grade 9 student at Midsun Junior High, and I am so so sorry with your loss of your daughter. Mina was by far the most talented, kindhearted, and joyful person I know. I’m so sorry that I couldn’t have done anything for her like she did to me in previous years. She was so kind and gentle, and would always approach kids to make sure if they were alright. I don’t think there was a single day where I didn’t see Mina laugh or smile. She was contagious in a way. One day you never knew she existed, and then the next day you always want to be with her and see her. I first met Mina in Fish Creek School elementary. She was the new kid, so I decided that I should say, “Hi”. At first she was a very timid person and refused to talk with anyone, but slowly she started to open up. Mina was always there for me in my Midsun days, just as she was with my elementary days. You are so lucky you had your daughter; I can’t thank you enough for bringing her into this world. If I had not have met Mina, I probably wouldn’t have been who I am today. I don’t understand how there was nothing in the world that I could beat her in, she would always one up me in everything. At first it was really annoying how good she was at everything, but slowly I started to accept that I would never beat her in anything! Oh boy, I still remember the day when I did better in Mina on a test score. I was jumping with joy. That only happened once though because she would always come back stronger and more determined.

Me and Mina were quite close I would say, always hanging together with her at recess, always doing my school projects with her. The next few years in Midsun were even better than the last. Mina somehow found herself into my class again in Grade 8 and the whole thing repeated, we got even closer than before.

Feburary 6th, I was notified by my friend that something had happened to your daughter. I was crying my eyes out when I found out. All she’s done for me, and I haven’t done anything for her. I wish I could’ve done so much more for her, I wish that I was so much closer too her. You never know how much you miss someone until they’re gone. I know that this has affected you more then me, but Mina has impacted me so much in my life and really don’t know what I would do without her. I wish that I could just see her again and tell her how much we all cared for her, and just to thank her for all she did.

I know it’s hard, for her to be with us one day and to lose her the next. She’s in a better place now, in our memories, hearts, and in heaven.

Thank you again. So much for bringing her into this world. I really can’t thank you enough. Nothing can express my gratitude to you and Mina. Thank you, and sorry.

    From Lance Watson.

  26. Dear Minas family and close friends, my heart and deepest condolences go out to you in this time of your loss. Mina was a beautiful, smart, kind and an extremely talented young girl. Her and I were once close friends in grade 3, I have very few memories of us but I remember how her beautiful smile lit up her entire face, her quiet voice and bubbly personality, her love for school and her passion for art and music. It breaks my heart her life came to this at such a young age. Rest easy Mina❤️

  27. Mina, a person who excelled in everything thrown at her. She made us smile and made life just a little bit better. we laughed with her and joked around with her, she always seemed happy. Many cried more then they have in a long time hearing about her death, she meant a lot to all of us. She was a beautiful girl both inside and out.

And if course we can’t forget how wonderfully talented she was, flute, alto sax, piano, she was practically a goddess at them all. I remember having a couple of math classes with her, she knew all the answers and I looked up to her for how insanely smart she was. 46. Dear Mina’s Family:
Mina was a smart, dedicated, and caring person. She was never judgmental and always had a huge, bright smile on her face every time I would greet her, and say hi to her near her locker. I’ll never forget the fun, and amazing memories that I had with her in grade four, playing at the park together. She had a very warm, and inviting presence that surrounded her that I’ll forget. Rest in perfect peace Mina Penner, us kids at MidSun will never forget you!

Along with many others, I’m a Grade 9 student at Midsun. Mina and I first met in elementary, and though we didn’t talk much, it was always a goal of mine to get closer to such an amazing individual like Mina. She was so inspiring, dedicated, compassionate, and understanding. Not once did she ever turn someone away if they needed help, and she was always a role model to me. She was always the most mature person in the room, and her strength and determination made her so admirable. The passion and love she put into projects never went unnoticed, and her talents were simply immeasurable. I enjoyed seeing her happy, and it was a relief to see her opening up to people and expressing her thoughts and feelings to her friends. She never shied away from a challenge, and in fact embraced the difficulties, but nothing ever stopped her from completing her goals and being a better version of herself every single day. From the bottom of my heart, I’m sorry for your loss. Please know that everyone she met was charmed and delighted by her sweet and caring nature, and that she passed loved by so many people. She may be gone, but she’ll never be forgotten.

  48. To Mina’s family:
I can’t say that I knew Mina well, but from what I knew of her I knew she was a very kind and talented person. She was a fantastic musician and her art was something I could only dream of. I know her from band primarily and whenever she played the flute or the piano I was amazed at her skill. She always raised a helping hand if you needed it and she never spoke a bad word about anyone. I’ll never forget the memories that we had together in elementary school playing on the park and the monkey bars, and comparing the size of our callouses. Mina has affected so many lives at Midsun school and we will never forget her. My condolences to Mina’s family and friends during these hard times.

  51. Kaylee Oliver :

Mina was an amazing girl, who was talented, smart, kind, and a very good friend. I remember the first day she came to my elementary school, even though it was years ago. She was a very shy, quiet girl at first, but once I began to get to know her and talk to her, she had such an amazing personality! She could light up a whole room with her smile, and she was so nice to everyone she met. I remember how in music class she’d always play the piano for us, and how our music teacher couldn’t get over how good she was. Almost every day at recess me and Mina would rush over to the park and swing around on the “skyrunner” until our hands got blisters and started to bleed. I also remember our grade six talent show, where Mina played a song on the piano that was absolutely beautiful.
Then, in grade seven, I was very lucky to have Mina in my class. She sat beside me in math/science for most of the year, and I remember how she used to doodle all over her paper. She was an extraordinary artist, and drew with a burning passion- even in her little sketches.
Not only was she an amazing student, but she was also a great friend. If anyone came to school sad, or upset Mina always knew what to say to cheer them up. After grade seven we were never in the same class again, but we’d keep in touch and talk with each other once or twice a month in grade eight. We both went through some tough times, but at the end of the year things were starting to get better. Me and Mina then kind of drifted apart, but I really wish we never had.
On February 7th I was told by teachers that she had passed away, and I don’t exactly know how to describe how I felt. I’m very sorry Mina, I wish I had had the chance to tell you how much you mean to me, and to everyone in our Midsun community. I am very thankful for all the memories I had with you, and I wish I had the chance to make more. I’m sorry I wasn’t there for you Mina, and I will never forget you.

  60. Extraodinary, just extraodinary. I honestly can’t believe how talented this girl was. I was always jealous of how good she was at badminton, art, the flute, saxophone, school, and definitely the piano. Not only did she have many interests and talents, she was amazing at everything she did. She was an inspiration to me and many others and always put a smile on your face with her contagious smile. I didn’t know her very well but I knew she was a very kind hearted girl. I remember in grade six when we had that talent show, she was gonna perform but was gonna be late because she had a piano exam. The show was about to end and she still wasn’t there, but the whole gym waited for her and the teachers helped stall because we were all so excited to listen to her play for us. I can remember her walking in while everyone clapped and sat and listened to her play, we were all sitting there with our jaws dropped cuz it was so amazing. I know that she was a very hardworking person that will be dearly missed. I wish that I could’ve become closer with her, and I want to send prayers to her family and friends. ❤️

I’m very sorry for your loss. Mina was an incredible girl with so much yet to do. Mina and I met at Fish Creek School in grade 5. We became very close within a couple of months, and hung out together most every recess playing “4 square”.

We shared many great memories together including bike rides and sleepovers, but one of my favorites was the time we went to the lake and spent the whole day trying our hardest to catch a fish with only a single net. We would take turns getting into the water to scare the fish into the direction of the one holding the net. Of course we didn’t catch anything and we were very disappointed and also hungry. And so when we got back to my house, she taught me how to cook garlic and butter pasta. After that, we went out to fish creek park to walk my dog. We ended up at the river where she didn’t want to get her shoes wet. But I convinced her otherwise and so we walked in and proceeded to try and catch some Minnows. I don’t know why we were obsessed with catching fish that day.

Mina was such a special girl. She was a very talented pianist and artist. A very hardworking student, always striving for the best. And a kind and caring friend. I left Fish Creek School at the end of grade 6, and never saw Mina again. I very much regret not keeping in touch with her after I left, because after all she was one of the greatest friends I’ve ever had. I will miss you Mina, Rest In Peace.

  73. I am at a loss of words for the loss of Mina, a person who really got me to reflect upon myself, held influence upon me.
Mina and I worked closely in school in our 6th grade class we shared, although we had worked together prior to that, and I had noticed her years before that, too. From all the projects we did and assignments we completed together, to even just the conversations, I could tell Mina was probably going to be the most dedicated person I would ever met. She dedicated herself to every little detail, no matter how intricate, and always strived to make it her best. She was good at everything I wished I was good at, and for that, I really looked up to her as someone I aspired to be like. The thing with Mina was that she’d always talk to you like you could be just as smart as her. Just as incredible. She didn’t talk down to you, and she was ever so patient towards me.
Mina and I’s 6th grade astrology project was on the Big Bang theory; The beginning of the universe. We chose the hardest project, but she was determined, and therefore, I felt it too. She just translated that energy into others. We painted the background like the universe, stars and planets and galaxies. It turned out well, and I can remember how it looked vividly. I wish I still had it. I cherish the great time we spent together, along with every other moment too.
I wish I could’ve been there these past 2 years, been back in Calgary, for I hold myself to that there could’ve been some way I could’ve helped. I wish I could go back to Calgary to attend the funeral, to get to say the goodbyes that I never got to say. Mina will be fully in my head and heart on the day of the service and for years and years and years after, and my spirit will live in attendance for the place my body cannot. I send my full condolences to her family, and her close friends.
Mina, I will always remember you as the girl I made universes with. Rest easy. I’ll be thinking of you.

  96. I play badminton at Edison Badminton School, the same school Mina went to to play badminton. I started 3 years ago, and she was the very first friend I made there. All the way up until the last day I saw her, she remained a friend of mine that I cherished, even if she didn’t know. I hope she knew how much she meant to me. She wasn’t just someone who I played badminton with. She was one of the sweetest most caring most selfless and humble people I knew, and it pains me to think that she could of ever felt so much pain that she felt there was no other way out. I only knew her for three years, so I can only imagine the heartbreak that her family is suffering. I am so, so, so sorry for their loss. I’m not a religious person, but I pray for them and for God to bring Mina to a place where she can feel happy, because she deserved happiness more than anyone.

  97. I wish that Mina could of known how many people’s hearts she has touched, whether that was through her kindness, her music or her art. I didn’t know Mina very well but I truly wish that I did. I admired how talented, selfless, clever, friendly, and caring she was. I remember that Mina helped teach me to play flute in band, she inspired me so much. My deepest condolences and sympathy go out to Mina’s family. She will be dearly missed.

We were so saddened to hear of Mina’s passing. It was only a little over a year ago we sat together over lunch at Dennis & Agnes’ condo. What a delightful afternoon and a blessing to have spent that time together. It is evident that Mina was a great blessing to her peers both in action and reputation. We both grieve with you yet rejoice that she has had such an impact on those around her. What a legacy!

I offer my deepest condolences to your family and loved ones.

I’ve known Mina for more than two years now. She immediately stuck out as a talented badminton player. It was an amazing sight to see how someone so kind could smash a birdie as hard as she could! She was determined and was a great listener.

I’ve always looked forward to playing against her and was joyous to see her again time after time in my classes. Mina will be extremely missed at badminton at the YMCA.

I hope for the best for your family in these times.

    Dear Stephen, OkSoon, Dion & Family;
We are so sorry and so devastated for your loss of your amazing Mina. Everyone thought the world of Mina and her beautiful soul. After reading the hundreds of condolences and tributes, it seems Mina deeply touched each and every person who had the privelege to know her.
Mina was such a kind and talented girl who excelled at everything she devoted herself to. A gifted musician, artist, writer, cook & Honour Student, some may not know that Mina was also a talented athlete too. She held a Red Belt level in our martial arts class of Kuk Sool Won. When she was younger she seemed so shy but with her sweet smile she would go out and outdo everyone in training class including all the boys! Mina’s passing has hit our whole KSW Family very hard. We will miss her very much.
All of the tributes to Mina say that she was such a kind, caring and selfless soul who went out of her way to help others. It seems in today’s world of social media where everyone is supposedly so connected we forget that we need to reach out and not be afraid to make a direct human connection. Perhaps this will be Mina’s legacy to help other people to reach out for help and not keep everything inside.

I will always remember all the good times we had. They say we die twice, once when we are buried, and another when our name is spoken for the last time. I will tell Minas story and pass it on for years to come, Mina will never truly die. And it doesn’t matter how far away she may be, We will love her forever

You never know how much you love someone until you no longer have them. I may not have not known you very well Mina, but I have enjoyed every second playing badminton with you at Edison school. I remember all the times that coach Lionel chose us as captains for “ultimate shuttle” and how your team always won, and I remember the joy we shared when we won in doubles and didn’t have to do any excersizes 🙂 You were the sweetest girl I have ever met, and definitely the most talented musician from what I have heard you play. I’m not a religious person, but I believe there is something higher then this earth and that you are there right now. I couldn’t thank you more for being in my life and always making an effort to hang out with me at badminton, you will truly be missed. Until we reunite again.

You deserve nothing less than the world, I hope you’re at peace. Rest easy. My heart breaks and my condolences go out to everyone that Mina had touched.
