PAGE, Gordon

November 14, 1923 – Edinburgh, Scotland
April 14, 2018 – Calgary, Alberta

Gordon Page of Calgary passed away on Saturday, April 14, 2018 at the age of 94 years.

Born November 14, 1923 in Edinburgh, Scotland, Gordon grew up in the small fishing village of Pittenweem, describing it as the perfect childhood. In 1940 at age 16 he started naval training on the HMS Conway, graduating in 1942 and joining the British Merchant Navy on board the M.V. Empire Grace. He often described his war years as one of the most exciting times of his life. After discharge from the British Merchant Navy in 1947, he married his sweetheart Ruth Westcott, a Canadian enlisted in the WRENS, who he had met while she was stationed in Britain. In 1947 they moved to New Zealand where two of their three children were born and where he worked with the Union Steamship Company. In 1952 the family immigrated to Canada, living in Ontario, Manitoba, and Alberta where he worked for well over 50 years dealing with industrial and municipal issues related to water and energy generation. He participated in many of Alberta’s large oil related projects and was involved in front line pioneering efforts to recover oil from the oil sands. In his later years he went overseas to participate in foreign aid projects in Santiago, Chile and Warsaw, Poland. He always seemed to have boundless energy and was incredibly organized. We fondly remember his cheeky sayings such as “If you want to be sick, you’ll be sick” which was usually delivered from the bedside of someone wracked with fever and cough.

Gordon is survived by his wife of 70 years, Ruth; children, Belinda, Brian (Joanne), and Matthew (Susan); grandchildren, Douglas (Helen), Kailey, Stephen, Jesse, Melanie, and Taylor; and great-grandchildren, Blake and Owen.

Gordon was predeceased by his parents, Dr. Douglas Murray Page and Elizabeth Page (nee Sturrock); and sister, Anne.

Memorial Services will be held at Christ Church (Hwy 549 East, Millarville, AB) on Thursday, July 5, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.

Our heartfelt thanks to the wonderful third floor staff at the Bethany Care Home. They took such good care of him.

In living memory of Gordon Page, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Park Memorial, 5008 ELBOW DRIVE S.W. Calgary, AB, T2S 2L5, Telephone: 403-243-8200.

John Fair, Mike Bridle and Steve Portelance organized the all the Calgary Water Treatment Specialists gathering to honor Gord on his 90th birthday at the Delta Hotel at Macleod and Southland Calgary. Fantastic memories will be shared by all on this special day. Gordon’s passion to learn what was going in water treatment carried on throughout his retirement even at the Bethany Care Home where we visited him to share our water treatment stories. He was affectionately know by all of us in the water treatment field as the “Godfather of Water Treatment” which was the absolute truth.

A great water treatment group photo on Gord’s 90th birthday is available upon request to Steve Portelance.

  5. Bob Holloway :

Gord and I have been friends since Cochrane Water Conditioning was established in Canada in 1955-56 and I have many great memories of his unfailing sense of humour, commitment to hard work, loyalty to friends. He was always eager to try new approaches to problems and impatient with those whom he felt lacked vision. But most of all I remember his pride in, and his love for, Ruth and his family. He has been a great friend and I will miss him. My thoughts and prayers are with his family.

  6. The Fair Family :

Having worked with Gordon for over thirty years, I can say that he had a significant influence on the water treatment industry in Alberta. He took pride in trying to pass on the knowledge he had accumulated over his long career to the benefit of many people and organizations. He had a great sense of humour which came out on every occasion. He was blessed to have a loving wife as Ruth, a very pleasant lady who also has a great sense of humour.
He will be missed by the industry, friends, and all who met him. Please accept our deepest condolences.

  11. Karen Rinehart Pidcock :

The news of Gordon’s death just learned, is shocking and so saddening for his beloved Ruth now grieving him. I’d phoned on Ruth’s January26 birthday, and spoken to both Gordon & her, and never expected him to precede Ruth in death. Both were such gracious friends to my now deceased husband, & Anglican priest, during our early days in Kaslo, and have been missed ever since they returned to Alberta. They gave us the wooden shepherd’s crook, from their sheep raising days in Millarville, before moving to Kaslo…which I bring to church on such times as a reminder of “Good Shepherd”, or St. Nicholas, Bishop of Myra, whose life we celebrate each December 6. I’ll always gratefully recall the meals shared at their Kaslo home & table…& the beautiful garden they created at 4th & Front Street here in this charming village. I loved teasing Gordon about his Scottish pronunciation of Psalm (Sam), & have long celebrated his foresight in helping create the Kaslo Bay Park, which continues to be so enjoyed. Rest In Peace, Gordon, & thanks for sharing your life & friendship with Dirk & me.
