November 28, 2018 – Calgary, Alberta

Charles Gordon (Gord) Packer died peacefully in the Father Lacombe Care Centre in Calgary AB on November 28, 2018 at the age of 83.

Gordon was born on January 25. 1935 in Winnipeg Manitoba to Charles and Mary Packer. He grew up in St. Vital, graduated there and caught the eye of a young beauty queen and married Corinne Williams on June 7, 1957. Gord had a long and varied 45 year career in the oil and gas industry moving the young family from Winnipeg to Ft. McMurray, and settling in Calgary in 1969 where he earned a reputation as a diligent worker in the field of procurement. Gord was an accomplished golfer and nearly went pro in his youth, and he pursued the sport throughout his life. He enjoyed world and local travel and fine dining and a good wine. He was thrilled to find Joan Darker to share in these pursuits in his later years after Corinne’s passing. They married on June 12, 2010, and shared many wonderful times with a wide circle of friends, celebrating life events with his daughters and their families and Gord was warmly welcomed into Joan’s family as well. Despite a number of health challenges, Gord stayed positive and his final years were spent in comfort and surrounded by those who loved him.

Gord is survived by his loving wife, Joan, his daughters Susan (Bryant) Petkau and Terry (David) Schmidt, grandchildren, Tyler Petkau, Taryn (James) Dempster, Erica Schmidt, Eden Schmidt, Evan Schmidt and great-grandson, Jack Henry Dempster. He is preceded in death by his beloved first wife of 50 years, Corrine (Williams) Packer and by his parents, Charles and Mary Packer.

A Celebration of Gord’s Life will take place at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church (703 Heritage Dr SW, Calgary AB) at 11 a.m. on Thursday, December 6th, 2018. 6. Sheri and Gord Rouse :

Dear Joan and to all of Gord’s family, I am completely heartbroken to hear of Gord’s passing. I’ve been meaning to phone you both and I’m just devastated. My most heartfelt condolences. I will be there Thursday. Gord was an AMAZING man with the biggest heart. He was my mentor in the oil and gas industry just starting my career and was my go to for advice and direction. Even after his retirement, his thoughtfulness continued with yearly cards to my children on their birthdays. We are losing a great man and thankfully are left with the most wonderful memories.

  11. Paul McGinnis :

I was very sorry to learn of the passing of my cousin Gordon. My wife Montha and myself appreciated that Gordon and Coleen took my daughter Melanie into their home one Christmas when Melanie was a student at the University of Calgary. We also appreciated that Gordon and Joan attended Melanie’s wedding in Ottawa. Montha and I also enjoyed the meals we shared together in Ottawa – two of which were at Montha’s Thai restaurant. We are sorry that we were never able to take up Gordon and Joan’s invitation to visit them in Calgary.
Our condolences to Joan and Gordon’s children
