PACIONE, Antonio (Tony) Fernando

June 13, 1945 – Ofena, Aquila, Italy
March 24, 2019 – Calgary, Alberta

Antonio (Tony) Pacione, beloved husband of Maria Elena (Marilena) Pacione (nee Colarossi) of Calgary, AB passed away surrounded by his family after a short but courageous battle with cancer on March 24, 2019 at the age of 73 years.

Tony began a long career in the steel industry in Italy as a young apprentice alongside the town blacksmith at fourteen years of age. He then found employment at a large steel foundry in Milano at the age of sixteen, and eventually transferred to its sister location in Northern France, in 1965. During his six years in France, he met and eventually married the love of his life, Marilena in 1968. A son, Frederic (Fred) arrived on the scene in 1970. With dreams of improved opportunity and to join his four siblings who had immigrated previously, Tony brought his family to Canada in April 1971. A second son, Marco, was born in 1976. Tony spent every day imparting an example of what it meant to be a good husband, father and grandfather along with being a true friend to all in need. The pinnacle of his happiness was welcoming five wonderful grandchildren, born between 2000 and 2008; his biggest challenge was keeping track of the many reasons his grandkids gave him to love and be proud of each and every one of them.

Tony’s steel career flourished during Calgary’s first explosive growth phase in the late seventies and early eighties. He had his hand in the building of various downtown landmarks including many of the plus-15’s in the downtown core that many of us cross through daily. His proudest accomplishments include: the cupula structure on the roof of the Alberta Treasury Branch Building as well as the ornate roof of the Calgary Chinese Cultural Centre. Tony transitioned to a second career, working at Rona in his later years, where he was able to apply his love for tinkering and being a handyman, while also sharing his knowledge with customers, and making new friends.

All who knew Tony will remember his lifelong passion for gardening, which for years provided exquisite tomatoes. September marked the magical time of the year when the fresh California grapes arrived, thereafter crushed and blended by Tony and the boys and grandchildren, to create his special elixir that he was so proud to share with anyone. To add to his love for hunting and fishing, in his mid-fifties, Tony decided to prepare for his retirement by trying his hand at golf. He instantly fell in love with the sport for the reasons many others do, but most importantly, it offered an avenue to create many new friendships, for which he was so grateful. And finally, Tony always had a love for hockey, since he first enrolled his young boys in this “weird sport” played with “strange looking wooden hooks and funny shoes” on ice. We know that he’ll be cheering on his beloved Calgary Flames during their upcoming playoff run.

Tony leaves behind his wife of fifty-one years, Marilena, his sons Fred (Melissa), Marco (Diana); and five grandchildren, Olivia, Eric, Adrian, Julian and Nadia. He also leaves behind two sisters, Maria Bonit of France and Iole Pacione of Italy; sisters-in-law, Dominique and Wanda Colarossi of France, Angela, Nella and Pina Pacione of Calgary; along with many nieces, nephews and friends throughout the world.

Tony was predeceased by his parents, Giuseppe and Carmela Pacione; his in-laws, Salvatore and Nina Colarossi; siblings Nino, Domenico, Rodolfo, and Ida; brothers-in-law, Antonio Giustini, Edoardo Lancione and Rene Bonit; and finally his nephews Carmelino and Sergio Giustini.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Mary, Mother of the Redeemer Parish (1714 – 14th Avenue N.E., Calgary, AB) on Friday, March 29, 2019 at 10:30 a.m. Reception to follow in the Parish Hall. Antonio will be laid to rest at Queen’s Park Cemetery. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Alberta, 200, 119 – 14th Street N.W., Calgary, AB T2N 1Z6 Telephone: (403) 264-5549, www.heartandstroke.ca or to the Canadian Cancer Society, 200 – 325 Manning Rd. N.E., Calgary, AB T2E 2P5 Telephone: (403) 205-3966, email donorservices@cancer.ab.ca.

    Marilena, Fred, Marco & family,

We will miss Tony so much. We will miss hearing him whistle and working in his yard. We will miss him calling to us over the fence, offering us delicious, home-grown lettuce. We will miss his never failing, early, start at snow removal on dark and cold winter mornings. We will miss his eagerness to be the first neighbor out in the spring with his lawn mower. We will miss his friendly face, always waving, smiling and saying “hello” to us in our front yard. Eric will miss conversing about golf with Tony, as well as his home and gardening advice.

Tony was so kind and helpful to us over the years from assisting with flat tires, tree pruning, tool lending, etc. The kind of neighbor a person is reflects who they are.

    Rest In Peace Tony.

Marco, I was so sad to hear about your dad this past weekend. He was such a character! We had a blast with your family back in the old Indus hockey days. I’ll never forget the time Tony brought some of his sausage and wine on a road trip. After the first sip, my mothers face was priceless. My parents talked about that for years! Also, wanted to say thank you for coming to my dad’s service on Sunday. It was great to see you. Please give my best to Fred and all my love to your mom.
