February 12, 1924 – Ashern, Manitoba
September 2, 2019 – Calgary, Alberta
Wally Otto of Calgary, AB passed away on Monday, September 2, 2019 at the age of 95 years.
Wally was born on February 12, 1924 and grew up in Ashern, Manitoba. He went to a one room school, by dog team in winter. During World War II, he served with the RCAF (1943-1946) as an airframe mechanic, in Halifax and Moncton. One of his jobs was to crawl into the wings of Catalina aircraft with cables, because he was the only one skinny enough to fit. After the war, he married Eileen Felske on October 1, 1949 in Portage la Prairie, Manitoba. Wally completed an electronics technician certificate and got into the seismic business as a ‘doodle bug’ with Western Geophysical. He worked as part of a seismic crew all over western Canada, living in a house trailer with Eileen, Nancy and Bill. When Bill started school in 1957, the family settled in Calgary and Wally started working with Southwestern Industrial Electronics, repairing and servicing seismic instruments. He worked all over western Canada, the Canadian arctic, Alaska, and even on a boat off Singapore. In 1969, Wally changed jobs to work at Western Electronic Systems, a seismic instrument supplier, eventually becoming President. After retiring in 1989, he competed in skeet shooting, and later sporting clays. He travelled all over the world with Eileen and Ross. An avid blackjack player, Wally loved to spend time at the casino right up to his death. He was an avid reader and books were always a welcomed gift.
He was a very happy man, loved his family, and often said he was the luckiest man in the world. Wally wrung every last bit of enjoyment and adventure out of a long life.
Wally is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Bill Otto and Susan Gowen, and Ross Otto and Barbara Podmore; nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He was predeceased by his wife Eileen Otto in 2002, and his daughter Nancy Otto in 2017.
