O’CONNELL, Josephine “Jo” Priscilla (nee Gallon)

April 11, 1931 – Monmouth, Wales
July 24, 2018 – Calgary, Alberta

Josephine “Jo” Priscilla O’Connell of Calgary, passed away on Tuesday, July 24, 2018 at the age of 87 years.

Jo was born on April 11, 1931, the first of three daughters to Robert and Gladys Gallon in Monmouth, Wales. She grew up during World War II and as a result of those experiences she became a fiercely independent woman and courageous wife and mother. She trained as a nurse in London, England, along with her two sisters.

Jo immigrated to Canada from the UK in 1955 where she joined the Royal Canadian Air Force on May 27, 1960. She worked as a Flying Officer Medical Nurse until she had an honourable release on November 8, 1962. She married Michael on April 26, 1963 and together they had three children while living in Hinton and Grande Cache, AB. Jo returned to the UK in 1982 with her children after Mike passed away. There she worked as a nurse and caretaker at Rose Court, a senior’s home in Chichester, where she was adored by the residents. Jo came back to Canada for her retirement, settling in Rocky Mountain House to be close to her daughter. She eventually moved to Calgary where she drank tea, shopped with friends and spent hours crafting.

The last two years of her life were lived under the watchful care of her family physician Dr. Lisa Penner and the amazing staff of Age Care Walden Heights.

Jo is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law Kenneth and Christine O’Connell and Chris and Maxine O’Connell; daughter and son-in-law Liz and George Weimar; and seven grandchildren, Laura, Jordan, Jack, Molly, Morgan, Callum and Declan. She was predeceased by her loving husband Michael, parents Robert and Gladys, and her sisters June and Pauline.

A Private Celebration of Jo’s Life will be held at a later date. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. We knew Jo very well and shared many good times together. We did many car trips round regional Perth. We first met Jo at the nursing home where she worked and took advantage of her extensive local knowledge to see the sights of Chichester. She was a good person and will be sadly missed. Mara and I send our condolences and love to all her family.
