NORTH, Gwendoline (Gwen) Joan

Gwen North died on March 12, 2016 at the age of 83. She will be missed by her sisters Ruth and Suzanne; her nieces Catherine, Nancy, and Beverly; her nephews Ian and Steve; her beloved great niece and nephews Lauren, Sean, Thomas, and Justin who always referred to her as “A.G.”; and by her many friends.

Gwen had a long career as a devoted high school teacher and librarian in Calgary. She will be remembered by the countless students she was so passionate about helping, and the colleagues she enjoyed working with. Gwen loved to travel, and spent many happy summers overseas walking through the cities of Europe, particularly London and its surrounding areas. In her later years, she stayed closer to home, but still enjoyed visiting friends and family across Canada, along with the occasional jaunt to sunny climates like Hawaii and Mexico. Gwen loved music and the theatre. She spent many happy evenings at concerts with friends both at home and while travelling. She enjoyed entertaining, and dinners at her home were a welcome regular event for both friends and family. Gwen never missed the opportunity to mail out a card, many of which she made herself. Equally, she loved to receive them and was known to drop broad hints when her friends and family went on vacation or during the holidays. She was in every way an exceptional individual, respected and loved by all who had the good fortune to know her. A Memorial Service will be held at a later date. If friends so desire, memorial donations may be made to a charity of their choice. Condolences may be forwarded through

In living memory of Gwen North, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Park Memorial, 5008 ELBOW DRIVE S.W. Calgary, AB, T2S 2L5, Telephone: 403-243-8200.

Condolence Messages

  1. I worked with Gwen at Dr. E.P. Scarlett High School. She was an amazing librarian and a wonderful person to be around. She truly cared for the students and their work and I know she positively impacted a great many people. She was strong in her views, but kindly with everyone she interacted with. I always enjoyed talking with her about literature, her many trips and fun things she was doing. I want to send my sincerest condolences to her family. I was saddened to see that she has left us all, but I smiled as I remembered what a special person she was.

Sorry Gwen, that I did not have a chance to say good bye. Though you will remain alive in my memories, you will be sorely missed. A beautiful lady who’s passing will leave this world a little less bright.

  4. Gwen is so on my mind this morning. So, I wondered… and sadly my thoughts were accurate, and my beautiful friend is no longer here. I used to clean Gwen’s apartment, and we became good friends. She was so wonderful to my daughter, like the grandmother my daughter needed. Often my daughter would spend time doing crafts with Gwen while I cleaned. We both treasured the beautiful cards she made with such great love. Every holiday and birthday meant something special would be coming from Gwen. I loved hearing about Thomas and Lauren and Sean, and all of you and her dinner parties. She was so kind and wonderful to me and my daughter when my own family was not there for us. I would love to know where the tree for Gwen is, in Fish creek park, as I would like to take my daughter there, and have our own little time with our dear friend. Hugs and love to you all. I was so blessed to know AG as my friend.
