NICHOLSON, Margaret Frances (nee Sutton)

February 28, 1939 – Queensland, Australia
January 12, 2016 – Calgary, Alberta

Margaret “Sut” Nicholson of Lethbridge, passed away on Tuesday, January 12, 2016 at the age of 76 years.

Born on February 28, 1939 in Gympie, Queensland, Australia; Margaret grew up in Dalby, Queensland and later attended the University of Queensland in Brisbane where she earned an undergraduate degree in Bio-Chemistry. After graduation, Margaret travelled to Canada with her best friend Majory, and met her husband-to-be, Ted in Edmonton, Alberta. The couple moved to Vancouver in 1968, where they were married and where they welcomed the arrival of their daughter Karen in 1971. During that time, Margaret worked in her field of study at the bio-chemistry lab at UBC. The Nicholsons re-located to Lethbridge, Alberta in 1972.

Margaret’s passions and pastimes include sewing, needlepoint, cross-stitching, quilting, puzzles, and cooking. She was a volunteer for the Heart & Stroke Foundation, and generously gave her time to elderly persons who needed assistance filing their tax returns.

Margaret’s skill in the kitchen, endless creativity, and razor-sharp wit will be dearly missed.

Margaret is survived by her son and daughter-in-law Cam and Jennifer Nicholson of Calgary; her grandson Kai; and her brother and sister-in-law John and Coral Sutton of Tin Can Bay, Queensland, Australia.

She was predeceased by her husband of 45 years, Ted Nicholson, who passed away on New Years Day in 2013; and her daughter Karen who passed away in 2007.

  1. Lorne and Lynda Wilson

Cam, Jennifer and Kai, we send our deepest sympathy on the passing of your mum and grandma. We always looked forward to sharing good times and much laughter with Ted and Margaret whenever the DEWline gang gathered for their reunions. Your mum and dad had an insatiable curiosity about the world around them. Margaret was a beautiful person, kind and caring. She was a delight to spend time with. There was no doubt that she treasured her family and took great joy in spending precious time together. Our lives have all been enriched by your very special mum. With sadness and caring, Lynda and Lorne

My sincere sympathy to Cam, Jen and Kai from across the Pacific. Margaret was a true friend – always kind, gentle and gracious; I am privileged to have known her as a friend. In spite of the tyranny of distance we remained in close contact over all these years, keeping up with news and photos of the family to whom she was devoted, especially those photos of Kai as he grew. I have treasured memories of times together when the children were young and especially of my last visit with Ted and Margaret – they are very special cherished memories. I am deeply saddened by the loss of my dear friend. Kindly, caring thoughts to Cam, Jen and Kai at the passing of your wonderful Mum and Grandma.

Our sympathies to you all, Cam. Jen. and Kai. Your Mum was a very special lady and she has gone too soon. She was a great friend to our family and in a very short time made us all feel like we had family in Lethbridge when we moved there in 1982. She showed us the Canadian way (she was from down under too) and helped out looking after our children when we needed that. I probably did more handcraft with her in Canada than I ever did before or after and I did enjoy it, she was gifted and enjoyed with the things she achieved. Margaret and Ted ensured their kids had an all-round education, encouraging them with their sport and studies. They were very proud to report on their deserved successes.
Thankyou Cam for keeping us informed, it will have been a tough time for you all. we hope one day to see you again and please know you are very welcome here anytme. We are thinking of you and send our love.
