NEWCOMBE, Brian Garfield

March 17, 1943 – Calgary, Alberta
October 22, 2018 – Calgary, Alberta

Brian Garfield Newcombe passed away on October 22, 2018, at the age of 75 in the city he loved: Calgary.

Brian was born in Calgary on March 17, and lived his entire life here, with the exception of a short time in Vancouver, BC. He spent most of his life in sales and represented numerous companies as a top salesman before starting his own business in food sales, which he ran for fifteen years in southern Alberta, and retiring at the age of 60.

Brian loved to sing and party and lived life to the fullest. His wicked sense of humour brought happiness and laughter to his family and friends, and nothing was more important to Brian. The holidays were very special to Brian and he was proud to be known as the “Host with the Most”, especially at Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas. His home was always open, and was his pride and joy. He loved gardening, and he took a great deal of satisfaction in his yard as well. Brian also loved to travel, and spent many vacations in Mexico with Helga. Helga brought to Brian stability, love, and, most of all, a sense of life. In his later years, he and Helga faced many obstacles, but with her support and guidance, they stayed the course together.

Brian is survived by his love and partner of thirty-five years, Helga Pfob, whom he met in 1983 and with whom he fell in love at first glance, and which love never wavered for the remainder of his life. Joining two families, they formed one inseparable, loving family. Brian is also survived by his son, Chadwick (Jillian) Newcombe, his grandchildren, Jacob, Stella and Evelynn, his son, John Newcombe, all of Calgary, his stepdaughter, Gina (Greg) McLean, and their children, Jesse and Alicia, of Okotoks, his stepdaughter, Yvonne Herron, and her children, Nicholas and Bailee, of Calgary, his stepson, Juan Pfob, of Calgary, his sister, Barbara Golke, of Houston, Texas, his nephew, Neil (Karen) Golke, of San Jose, California, his sister, Penny Burden, of Red Deer, AB, his niece, Tamara (Vance) Porter, his great-nephew, Noah, his great-niece, Lauren, of Calgary, AB, his nephew, David Burden, of Red Deer, AB, and many other friends and relatives across the country and beyond. Brian was predeceased by his brother, Norton (1953), his father, Earl (1973), and his beloved mother, Grace (1994).

Brian will be sorely missed by those who knew him as a mentor, friend and steadfast companion. Whenever called upon, he was there with a helping hand or solid advice.

The Celebration of Brian’s Life has been postponed, the family will announce a future date once a new date and time has been rescheduled. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.

In living memory of Brian Newcombe, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Fish Creek, 14441 Bannister Road S.E., Calgary, AB, T2X 3J3, Telephone: 403-256-9575.

  2. Deepest condolences to Helga and all the family Newcombes, Pfobs, McLeans and all. As surprising as it may seem to some I sought Brians’ common sense advice at many of the more challenging moments I have faced and he was always there. It was my privilidge and honor to have him as one of my best friends. He is and will be lovingly missed, truly one of a kind.
