NEUMANN, Walker Buck

February 10, 1984 – St. Walburg, Saskatchewan
November 6, 2018 – Calgary, Alberta

Walker Neumann, beloved husband of Jacey Neumann (nee Seebach) of Foothills, AB, passed away on November 6, 2018 at the age of 34 years.

Walker was a small town farm kid who grew up with a passion for the energy industry that both his father and grandfather also worked in.

In 2007, while attending the University of Saskatchewan he met a kind, loving and wonderful woman Jacey.  She captured his whole heart and on October 12, 2013 they were united in holy matrimony in Saskatoon.

Walker came to Calgary in 2008 where he found employment originally with Talisman Energy as a geologist.  In 2012, Walker transferred to NuVista Energy as a senior geologist and soon was promoted to manager of Montney Development.

Walker was a kind, respected and loving man.  He loved working on his acreage and spending time pulling wrenches on his classic dodges.  He loved to surround himself with his family, friends and fur babies (Tango and Ruger) around a massive bon fire while sharing a drink.  If Walker wasn’t tinkering with his dodges he could be found spending time outdoors quadding, sledding, camping or just spending time with the Neighbours (“The Ridge Crew”).  He played hockey, loved his hunting and was a dedicated Dodge/Jeep/John Deer man through and through.

Besides his loving wife, Jacey, Walker is survived by his loving parents Dale and Colleen Neumann; his sister by heart Elissa Ellis; his brother by heart Eric Festa; his mother and father-in-law Ralph and Dodie Seebach; his childhood best friends David and Daniel Yasinski; aunts, uncles and cousin as well as the many friends that he made throughout his lifetime.

He was predeceased by his maternal grandparents Andrew and Gladys Minty; his paternal grandparents Kurt and Trudy Neumann; his great Uncle and Aunt Alfred and Alice Exner.

A Celebration of Life in honour of Walker will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY (Deerfoot South, 12281 – 40th Street S.E., Calgary, AB) on Saturday, November 10, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. Reception to follow in the Hospitality Centre at the funeral home. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.   If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to the Alberta Mental Health Board, Attn: Steve Ritz, 10025 Jasper Avenue, 19th Floor, Edmonton, AB T5J 2N3.

In living memory of Walker Neumann, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Deerfoot South, 12281 – 40th STREET S.E., Calgary, AB T2Z 4E6, Telephone: 403-203-0525.

Condolence Messages

  1. Kerri Duncan (Kozinski) :

I am so very sorry to hear of your loss Jacey, Dale and Colleen. I grew up with Walker and went to school with him from Kindergarten until Grade 12 and even got to party with him a bit in University. The last time I saw him was 6 or so years ago at the Farmhouse Inn. Jacey, you and him were out for supper. I remember he was so proud to introduce you to me (he was glowing) and I was so happy to hear of where his life had taken him. I always knew Walker would be successful in whatever career he chose! He was a fun, easy going guy that ways had a smile on his face. I am sending my deepest condolences to you and your families. I know I will cherish the memories I had with him. I am trying to send some pictures of the younger years- hopefully they work!

  19. Jacey, many of us at Talisman/Repsol are devastated to hear this terrible news. I’ve know Walker since 2012 when he was a valued member of a special team called Conventional Options. I was thoroughly impressed by his technical understanding of the Montney and geologic concepts of tight gas! He had skills well beyond his level of experience and I always knew he would do well. I lost most of the heated technical conversations I had with the lad, but I developed a tremendous respect for him as a person and his capabilities. It is with sincere sadness that I offer my heart felt condolences to you.
Take comfort that he was a well regarded member of our Geoscience community and he will be missed.
I hope you find comfort with friends and family during this difficult time.

My sincere condolences go out to you Jacey, Colleen and Dale. My brothers- Dave and Fr.Dan were best friends with Walker growing up, so it seemed as though we saw Walker daily. We all loved that guy. He was always kind and respectful to all of us, and I can remember him having TONS of fun with the twins. I can still remember one time he slept overnight at our house. Him and the twins slept in the basement under the stairs, and the next day he said it was more fun than going to Disney land. My heart hurts for you all- our family is praying for yours. I hope you are able to find comfort in these dark days. Care take and may Christ’s loving arms surround you.

I am so incredibly sorry for your loss, and my thoughts and prayers are with you during this time.
I went to university with Walker. He was one of the most vivacious souls. He was passionate about his vehicles, his family, his friends, and life. Walker exuded such excitement when he was doing something he enjoyed- that could be something as simple as talking his Jeep for a wash, or going for a long-haul for work.
Walker was kind, caring, a jokester, and determined. Walker was known for his drive- if he had something in mind, he made a plan and got to it. He believed in others, encouraged people to succeed and to believe in themselves.
Walker was a friend to me in a way that I hold so dear- he dropped everything to help. It was Walkers kindness, firm stance on life and his passion to see others succeed that helped me, and I know he put his efforts into others. If you succeeded, Walker was the first to say how proud he was of your achievements.
Confident, encouraging, kind, and good. Those are the words I would to describe Walker. It was a gift to watch him fall in love with you, Jacey. Thank you for loving him, for making him shine so bright.
An amazing friend, an fantastic peer, and a good man. I will miss my friend terribly, as I know many others will- but the legacy of good that Walker leaves behind will be honored and not forgotten
I am so incredibly sorry for your loss.

To Jacey and your extended family, and to Walker’s parents Dale and Colleen – on behalf of myself and NuVista Energy,

I want you to know just how devastated we all are in the terrible loss of Walker. Walker was truly a “rock star” in the geological sense of the word in addition to being one of our brightest up and comers. He made technical and economic decisions with acumen and poise well beyond his years. Walker’s solutions were always based in the utmost practicality. He was one of the most liked members of our NuVista family, and as Development Manager, he carried a large responsibility with our full confidence. His direct reports respected him deeply, and there was never a staff get together or company event where Walker’s full participation and wry, almost knowing smile, was not present as a positive force of nature. The pictures we now have of him all over our wall are a fond reminder of the huge positive impact he made, and the lasting ripples he will leave behind well into our future.
I can’t find the words to tell you how much our hearts go out to all of you at such a terrible time. From a grateful company of Walker’s friends and colleagues, we are with you.

  63. A Friend

My heart and prayers go out to you Colleen, Dale, and Jacey.

The way we met was round about as we were in a class together before we had ever known each other. I was the kid at the back that wasn’t really paying attention (physics class) and being disruptive and Walker was the kid about halfway down the seating staring back at me giving me the dirties because I was disturbing his nap. When we both ended up in the first mineralogy class together for geology, I remember sitting there with a confused look on my face because I had no idea what the heck the prof just talked about for the last hour. I turned to the guy on my right (Jason) and to the guy behind me (Walker) and they had the exact same look on their face of “what did this guy just say, and what did we get ourselves into”?! We basically said that to each other and introduced ourselves and the rest was history. For the next 3 years we were pretty much always together.

Friendship – I remember when we went to Texas and New Mexico for a field school, he was so damn excited it was like he was going to the homeland of the cowboy. He even bought me a friggin’ hat and spent who knows how many hours shaping the damn thing for me. If that doesn’t scream friendship, I don’t know what would. I remember late night study sessions where we would hike all over university to get a cup of coffee or a quick rip in the mud bug (read Jeep) to grab some sort of nourishment to keep us going (which inevitably involved us stopping at the car wash for a quick wash even though time was in short supply).

Passionate – Walker was one of the most passionate resource geologists that I have ever met. He just got it. I remember doing our petroleum class in university and I still don’t think he learned anything in that class because he knew it all already. He also readily had a job coming out of university due to his performance as a summer student with Talisman, and its no wonder he was approached by NuVista when they started their company. The amount of commitment that Walker had is almost impossible to chronicle. There are so many stories that I think of and they all come back to him being a passionate person (with maybe a hint of stubbornness ). Jacey, his parents, the acreage, semi’s, dodge vehicles, cars in general, oil, hunting, nature, movies, hockey, the list goes on.

Work comes before play – I remember at a field school where we all stayed up too late enjoying life and the next morning it was pouring rain but dammit there was mapping to be done, so Walker got out of the chair that he had slept in, threw on his cowboy hat and rain slicker and off he went (there was maybe 5 of us that went out that day and I think he slept the least out of us all). I have this clear image of a cowboy all in black hiking up the side of a mountain with the grey Montana skies just pouring rain, but he was walking like it was a beautiful Sunday afternoon in a national park. In New Mexico I remember one day where we had to hike up this hill/mountain and we had obviously dehydrated ourselves the night before as both of our legs where seizing up while going up this slope. I remember Walker basically pounding on his thighs to try and get them to move as we climbed, there was nothing that was going to stop him/us from getting up that hill. I remember him calling me a damn mountain goat at some point on that trip. I also remember that our marks for that course were something like Jason got 100, Walker got 99, and I got 98 so I guess we were a pretty tight bunch.

Story Telling – Walker was a great story teller. He loved to tell tales of hunting, driving, hockey, our prowess in video games, pranks, high school shenanigans, stories about me that where embarrassing but funny as hell in his eyes (and to be fair they are funny in hind sight) and numerous other subjects.
Animated – When Walker was ardent about a subject that he was talking about he had a certain energy that took over his body (mostly his arms). He would start to talk a little faster and a little louder, but it was the arms flailing all over the place that let you know he meant business.

Generous – Walker would take the time out of his day for anyone that he called a friend to help them out if they needed. I didn’t live close to the university but sometimes the way life worked out I would need a ride. He wouldn’t hesitate to drive me all the way out to the acreage if I needed it.

He could take a joke – During his wedding rehearsal the preacher changed one of Walkers vows to “I Walker promise to give you Jacey all of my money and cars” and he said it because he was so intent on getting it right. The look on his face when he realized what he said was absolutely priceless.

Love – I don’t know how many days, hours, and minutes Walker and I spent talking about family and how important that was to us. Who were we going to meet, who where we going to marry and start a life with. When Walker met Jacey, I saw a side of him that I don’t think he wanted many people to see but it was impossible for him to hide anymore now that he had found love.

I had someone say to me that Walker and I were like an old married couple and that our relationship was entertaining to watch from the outside. Well I will take that as a compliment because I loved Walker like a brother and the only way you get to a level like that in a relationship is when you have gotten past all the light and fluffy stuff and have truly gotten to know a person and you know that you could depend on that person through thick and thin.

Laughter/Smile – My favourite memories with Walker are when he would start laughing about something that he found so funny and it was often when we were visiting over food or coffee. I have this clear image that popped into my head yesterday of his little smirk and his eyes smiling more than his face. He used to cover his smile with the back of his hand while he would just laugh/giggle to himself. He often would have a long sleeve button up on with the sleeves rolled up and in university usually his ball cap. This has been a constant image that I will treasure forever.

I will miss my friend dearly.

    Best,
    Nathan

  69. Jacey, Dale, Colleen and family, my sincere condolences for your tremendous loss.

I met Walker at Talisman when we were both working in the Montney. Neither of us knew what to make of each other at first, but we became friends. Walker was a force to be reckoned with – incredibly bright, honest, kind and he had a work ethic that was like nothing I had ever seen before in a peer. Walker made everyone around him better. I couldn’t figure out who this cowboy boot wearing, meticulously sleeve rolling geologist was, but I knew I wanted to work with him because he was just such a good guy. Walker and I remained friends over the years and I told him once at lunch that he had changed the course of my career in putting my name forward as his successor for a role. In typical Walker fashion, he responded with humility and tried to brush it off. I told him he was the only person I knew who had the gravitas to consistently wear cowboy boots on the executive floor and finally got a smile.

Though we have never met, you are all in my thoughts. Like anyone who knew Walker and worked with him, I respected him immensely and am better off for knowing him.

Keep your beautiful memories of him close to your heart. He will be with you always. Take care and God bless. Thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

  72. Ike & Brenda Uhuegbulem :

To Jacey, Dale, Colleen and the rest of the Neumann family and Seebach family.

I am totally devastated to learn about Walker’s passing. I had the pleasure of working with Walker at Talisman in 2008 and Walker was one of my direct reports. From the start, I was blown away by his passion, knowledge, intelligence, and professionalism that was beyond his years. Walker was truly a shining star and it was very evident to all of us who worked with him on a daily basis at Talisman. Our relationship quickly grew from just a professional one to a true friendship in which I had a lot of respect for Walker and provided any level of mentorship and advice he requested from me on any issue. Even after Walker moved from Talisman to NuVista, we still met up from time to time to discuss on several issues that he wanted my opinion on and I was really proud with all the progress Walker had achieved in both his professional and personal life.

Walker was very proud of Jacey and had a great outlook for their future together. When Walker reached out to me for real estate advice in securing a home for him & Jacey, I was happy that my wife Brenda & I played a role in helping Walker secure his home with Jacey.

Words cannot express the loss I feel and I would like to extend my prayers and love to your families. We will never understand why but I pray that our Lord Jesus Christ will provide you and all your family members with the strength and peace to bear this loss.
May Walker’s soul Rest in Perfect Peace. Amen.

  76. Ralph Allen, P.Geol. :

Walker was a great guy and a superb geologist.
We were in competing companies but I always respected him for his raw talent and enormous energy.
Talked with him about 6 weeks ago about a water disposal well and was very impressed with his professionalism.
My heartfelt condolences to his family and loved ones.
