NEARY, Gerald “Gerry” Hubert

August 19, 1923 – Dublin, Ireland
March 9, 2019 – Calgary, Alberta

Gerald Hubert, beloved husband of Carmel Margaret Neary (nee Farrington) of Calgary, AB , passed away on March 9, 2019 at the age of 95 years.

Gerry was born in Sandymount in Dublin, the second youngest of ten children. He married the love of his life, Carmel Farrington on August 9, 1950 after wooing her with chocolate from his family’s corner shop. They had two daughters in Dublin, Shelagh and Dara. In 1957 the family immigrated to Canada, where two more daughters, Geraldine and Donna, were born. Gerry had a large extended family in Calgary; this was the fulcrum of his life. He doted on his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren and was lovingly known as Grandad.

An upholsterer by trade, he had a gift for DIY and was the go-to guy if a family member or friend needed a basement developed or a deck built. He loved working with wood, hated throwing away any scraps and always straightened old nails out for future use. Gerry was known for his legendary Irish wit and he always had a quick comeback. When you were with him, you knew you would either end up laughing or as the end of a joke.

When their children were young, Carmel and Gerry loved to go camping. The family camped for many years with extended family, where the Neary’s took over the campground much to the chagrin of other campers. When the children got older, Carmel and Gerry loved to get away on their own in their camper and spent many weekends in Banff, where Gerry, a keen angler, liked to go fishing. In his later years he took to building birdhouses which he would gift to all and he harboured great joy when told that birds were nesting in the houses..

Gerry is survived by his loving wife of 68 years Carmel, his daughters, Dara Neary, Geraldine Faith and Donna Neary, and sons-in-law Murray Mikulak, Brendan Landers, Ken Faith and Michael O’Halloran; grandchildren, Sean Mikulak, Patrick Faith (and his wife Amanda), Kevin Mikulak (and his wife Alexandra), Julia O’Halloran Bartel (and her husband Taylor), Tyler Faith, Claire O’Halloran, Ethan Landers and Sinead O’Halloran and two great grandchildren, Oliver and Emery. Gerry was predeceased by his daughter Shelagh Mikulak.

Funeral Services will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY (Crowfoot, 82 Crowfoot Circle N.W., Calgary, AB), on Friday, March 15, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. Reception to follow in the Hospitality Centre at the Funeral Home. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.
