MUSSELL, James Geoffrey (Jim)

July 4, 1934 – Englehart, Ontario
December 7, 2018 – Calgary, Alberta

James (Jim) Geoffrey Mussell passed away peacefully on December 7th, 2018, at the Dulcina Hospice in Calgary Alberta at the age of 84 years with his loving wife of 32 years, Robyn, at his side.

Jim was born to parents Geoffrey and Violet Mussell on July 4th, 1934 in Englehart Ontario, the fourth of six children; Jim was the only son. Most of Jim’s childhood was spent on a farm outside of Brantford Ontario. He left high school after grade 10 to help support his family. In 1952 he joined the Royal Canadian Air Force and became a munitions technician. Jim was stationed at Cold Lake when he left the air force in 1956 after he met and married his first wife Irene Lambert. Jim and Irene lived briefly in Edmonton, then in 1961 moved to Drayton Valley area where they would eventually raise seven children; six boys and one girl. Jim accepted a position as a gas plant operator at a facility near Buck Creek, where the family would eventually settle. Besides his work in the oil patch, Jim worked as a part-time musician, homesteaded and farmed three quarters of land in the Buck Creek area. Jim re-married in 1986 to Robyn Swanson. He retired in 1992 and moved with Robyn to an acreage in the Cochrane area in 1998. Jim and Robyn remained a loving couple until his last breath.

From his childhood through to his final years Jim loved the outdoors. He was passionate about fishing, hunting, canoeing, horses, and many other outdoor pursuits. He and Robyn shared many of these interests, particularly their deep love for animals, the outdoors and adventure. Their passion for adventure took them from a gold mining claim in Northern BC to many places around the globe, including Ecuador, Australia, the Cook Islands and the Philippines, to name a few. Jim was recognized as a highly accomplished musician, a talent nurtured in his childhood by his pianist mother. Jim’s natural virtuosity at the piano made him popular at many Legion socials, community dances, family gatherings and anywhere there was a piano. Jim will be remembered for his sharp intellect, sense of humour and quick wit. He was also known for being articulate and well-informed about a great range of topics.

Jim is survived by his loving wife Robyn; his sons; David James (Carol), Gerald Paul (Sherry), Raymond John, Geoffrey Lyell (Rondine), his daughter Denise Marie Mandin (Marc), 16 grandchildren; Timothy, Chantelle, Hilary (Borys), Philippe, Jarrett, Dylan, Nicolas, Jonathan, Amy, Shaylin, Shelby, Jean-Luc, Korbin, Jessie, Georgia, Kendra and1 great-grandson; Jackson, plus many nieces, nephews and other extended family. He is predeceased by his parents; Geoffrey and Violet, 2 sons; Timothy Andrew and Kenneth Ian and his sisters; Glenna Stout (Dude), Reva Flack (Don), Mary Beale (Ron), Betty Stroud (Terry), and Laurel Linington (Gerry).

A celebration of Jim`s life will be held at Cochrane Royal Canadian Legion Branch 15 (114 Fifth Ave, Cochrane, AB), on Saturday, December 22, 2018 at 1:00 p.m. Condolences may be forwarded through The family wish to extend a heartfelt thank you to the staff at the Dulcina Hospice. Their kindness, care, attention to detail and genuine concern for all involved gave Jim’s passing an extraordinary level of dignity, respect and grace. For that we are truly grateful. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to a charity of one’s choice in honor of Jim. A celebration of life will also be held in Drayton Valley May 2019. Details to be announced at a later date.

Condolence Messages

  1. God Speed Uncle Jim.
My condolences Robyn, and all of my Alberta cousins. It was always so exciting to see Uncle Jim ( my Godfather ) because he lived so far away from us. I remember being very little and he and Aunt Irene visiting from the West, with much fanfare and spoiling us with gifts, then the first time I visited Drayton Valley and the warm welcome I received from the whole western family.
In later years His visits with Rob were always a big deal for his sisters and his Mom in Brantford and I remember all of the Laughter when they were together, and the music of course.
And he and Uncle Bill carousing and talking until the wee hours.
It is the end of an era as Jim was the last of the Mussell clan.
    My heartfelt condolences,
    Beth (Stout)

Jim has left many SOTB (Seniors On The Bow) members, especially us Jammers, with fond memories of Jim’s piano playing skills, he had a great memory for songs which we played along with him. A kind friend who helped my banjo tempo, and also played a very good 8 ball pool game. We miss him.
