MURPHY, Terry Lee (Sue)

August 11, 1957 – Nelson, British Columbia
August 2, 2018 – Calgary, Alberta

Terry Murphy, known to friends as “Sue”, passed away on August 2, 2018 at the age of 60.

Sue grew up in Crawford Bay, BC, the second-oldest of her six siblings. She attended business college in Trail and later moved to Cranbrook to pursue an apprenticeship in the newspaper industry as a compositor. During those times, she was often known as “Trans Am Sue”, racing around town in her car. Sue was an avid pool player and happened to meet Doug one night at a bar in Fort St John and challenged him to a game of pool. To her surprise, Doug beat her and they have been together ever since. Sue and Doug married in 1982 and had Tara, their only daughter, in 1983. Doug and Sue moved to Calgary shortly afterwards where Sue started her own typesetting company, Shawnessy Type.

Sue was a very outgoing and fun person to be around, always laughing and seeing the humorous side to life. Sue loved volunteering at the Meow Foundation and celebrated 15 years, going every Monday to care for the cats and even fostered a few who never seemed to leave her home! Sue also enjoyed cake decorating and all kinds of baking, and would pour over cookbooks finding the perfect dessert to accompany dinner or a special occasion she was looking forward to. Sue was also an amazing cook and was well-known for many famous dishes she proudly made better than Doug, such as prime rib, Yorkshires, and peanut-thai pizzas among others!

Sue was the kind of person that made new friends instantly and wasn’t shy to say hello or start up a conversation. She could often be found at Costco or the doctor’s office striking up a conversation and making a stranger smile. She was known to easily spot celebrities and would go right up to them and say hello. She was a warm and generous person who could make you smile when having a bad day, or give you advice. Sue was very honest, and that was one of her greatest qualities.

Sue was the best mother anyone could have, and celebrated almost 36 years of marriage with Doug.

We would like to thank the kind staff at Tom Baker cancer Hospital and South Calgary Hospital who helped care for Sue.

Sue is survived by her husband Doug and her daughter Tara.

Memorial Services will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY (Deerfoot South, 12281 – 40th Street S.E., Calgary, AB) on Friday, August 10, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. Reception to follow at the funeral home. Condolences may be forwarded through

In living memory of Sue Murphy, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Deerfoot South, 12292 – 40 Street S.E., Telephone: 403-243-8200.

Sincere condolences to the Murphy family. I have very fond memories working with Terry, as I knew her then. She was a generous and spirited person, who took pride in her work. She was most proud of being a wife and mom, and loved to share stories of her family and pets.

To Doug, Tara, your kitties and families,
My deepest condolences to you and your families. Words cannot adequately express the loss that you feel nor can they define what a truly wonderful, compassionate and kind person she was. She was a great wife, mother, foster mom and friend. I’m so fortunate to have met her and call her my friend. Although she is no longer with us, the imprint she left in our hearts and lives carry on for eternity. The world is a better place because of her.
