MURIE, Margaret

December 23, 1919 – Essex, Ontario
April 16, 2018 – Cochrane, Alberta

It is with great sadness that we, the family of Margaret Murie, announce the loss of our beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great grandmother. Margaret passed away peacefully on April 16, 2018 at the age of 98 years.

Margaret will be lovingly remembered for her dedication to her family. Her love of gardening presented a beautiful summer gathering spot for the family to be together, and her love of music she played filled the air with song, and happy music for all those around her. Her ultimate passion was bingo, and she was very talented at needlepoint. She battled with dementia, and even at the age of 98 she had a sense of humor and spunk that made everyone around her smile and laugh.

Margaret married James Murie and raised four daughters in Calgary; Joyce Hunt (Bill), Carol Anderson (Bruce), Donna Mercer (Brian), and Lynda Schleihauf (John). She is also survived by her eight grandchildren; Timothy, Darrion, Rayna, Chris, Paula, James, Robert, and Jason; and also will be missed by many great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.

Margaret was predeceased by her loving husband James Murie; her daughter Lynda; and her sisters Kaye and Vi.

There will be a private celebration of life for Margaret at a later date. Condolences may be forwarded through If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to The Alzheimer Society of Alberta and the Northwest Territories, Administrative Office, 10531 Kingsway Avenue, Edmonton AB T5H 4K1. Tel: (1-866) 950-5465, or the charity of your choice.

In living memory of Margaret Murie a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Cochrane, 369 RAILWAY STREET, COCHRANE, AB, T4C 2E2, Telephone: 403-932-4740.

Condolence Messages

  1. I met Margaret as a volunteer at Bethany. She amazed me with her bingo skills -playing 8 cards! Margaret was always a willing participant, and I loved her quick wit, smile, and her laugh. You often said you were “as weak as a kitten”, but you were a strong lady to me. Rest well Margaret, I will miss you.
