MUNRO, Donald (Don) Cameron

November 28, 1937 – Edmonton, Alberta
October 3, 2018 – Calgary, Alberta

It is with sadness that we share the news of the passing of Don Munro, devoted brother to Laverne (Gary) Grant, Vera (Winston) MacKinnon, Maryanne Stratton, and Jim (Frances) Munro, father to Mike (Heather) Munro, Thomas (Trinh) Munro, Cam (Shelley) Munro, Jill (Darrell) Cooksey, Ben McCaffery, Simon (Shellie) McCaffery, and Joel (Sokhon) McCaffery, and grandfather to Tom, Teeanna, Jessica, Nicholas, Elizabeth, Jacqueline, McKenna, Carson, Violet, Flash, Maya, Layla, Mathias, and Becca. He was predeceased by his wife Shirley.

In his earlier years, Don was an avid sportsman. He played football and basketball for the University of Alberta Golden Bears, and he also played football with the Edmonton Wildcats. Over his thirty-three year career with Edmonton Public Schools, he continued to share his passion for football and basketball and the development of these sports at the schools in which he worked. During many of these years, he served as a trustee for the St. Albert Protestant Separate School Board, and as a basketball referee with the Alberta Basketball Officials Association. After his retirement, Don moved to Vallican where he continued to serve his community as a Regional Director of East Kootenay. In 2014, he was inducted into the University of Alberta Sports Hall of Fame for his contributions as both an athlete and builder for basketball and football.

Don loved gardening, carving and spending time with his family, camping and skiing. He was a man of few words, and quiet action, but he has left a lasting impression on all of those who had the opportunity to spend time with or work with him.

The family is planning a celebration of life for Don, and will share this information once the date has been set. Condolences may be forwarded through

In living memory of Don Munro, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Fish Creek, 14441 Bannister Road S.E., Calgary, AB, T2X 3J3, Telephone: 403-256-9575.

Condolence Messages

  1. Jake Steinbrenner

My condolences to the friends and family of Don Munro. I was fortunate to referee with ‘Muncie’ several times in the 80’s. He was greatly respected by the players, coaches and his fellow officials. He also was the author of the Alberta Basketball Officials Association’s (ABOA) first comprehensive Evaluators Manual (1986), which was coordinated with Don through the Alberta Basketball Assn office in St.Albert (I offered staff admin support along with Exec Dir Don Warren & Sec Bernice Paulsen). In recent years we only heard about him occasionally through Larry Nowak (resides in Creston). He was a genuine guy/character and will be missed!

  2. So sorry to hear of your loss. I do believe this was my grade 7-9 teacher at Strathearn. Can you confirm this. If so we had so much fun with Mr Munro… from lifting his little car to the middle of the field. He never had a bad word to say about this, just a lot of laughs.
