MITTON, Noreen Audrey

August 3, 1939 – Regina, Saskatchewan
April 14, 2019 – Calgary, Alberta

Noreen Audrey Mitton was welcomed by her Lord and Saviour on April 14th, 2019 after a long and courageous battle. Stoic and beautiful, even in her passing she exuded elegance and grace – words people would consistently use to describe Noreen throughout her journey on this earth.

Noreen was predeceased by her father and mother Joseph and Gwendolyn Hutchinson, and her eldest sister Joy Binns. She was also predeceased by husband Cedric Mitton. We are comforted to know that once again, Ced and Noreen are riding side by side in a carriage pulled by Big John, enjoying the awesome sights of heaven’s version of the Ya Ha Tinda. Noreen is survived by her brother Barry (Lynn) Hutchinson and sister Dianna Bell of Regina and Noreen’s devoted sons Kim (Susan) McLean of Blackie, Brian McLean of Calgary, Wayne McLean of Kelowna, and Todd (Patty) McLean of Vancouver, along with many cherished grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Born and raised in Regina, SK, Noreen moved to Calgary in the 1960’s and then to the High River area a few years later where she raised her sons, largely on her own, by working several jobs and rising through the ranks at the High River Hospital as Head of Housekeeping and as Manager of the Black Diamond Seniors lodge. She was an active volunteer in the community, a strong minor sports booster, and she and Ced were among the founding members of the Spitzee Cutter and Carriage Club. Noreen and Ced followed their dreams and moved to Vancouver Island for several years until Ced’s death. She returned home to Alberta shortly thereafter. As a long time resident of Carroll Place in NW Calgary, Noreen made many lasting friendships and participated in a local award-winning knitting club. Alberta could not have adopted a more devoted daughter than Noreen. She loved its mountains, foothills, and prairies and a more dyed-in-the wool Alberta conservative could not be found. She would have delighted in the recent Alberta election results although you can be sure she would have been gracious in victory. Noreen had an extensive circle of friends, acquaintances and admirers. Too many to mention, but all well loved. While elegant in every way, Noreen had a tendency to inadvertently mislabel things such as the “Glove Department” and the “Ellen DeGenerate Show.” She loved to laugh, talk politics, share a drink with friends and quietly exuded pride in her sons and their families, especially grandchildren, Haley, Tucker, Colby, Hanna, Luke, Lauren and Rachel, and Great-Granchild, Jayden.

Noreen was loved and cared for in her final years by a variety of family, friends, and professionals at Carroll Place, Dr. Angela MacArthur, the staff at Season’s in High River and most recently by Dr. Oelschig and the amazing staff at Foothills Country Hospice in Okotoks.

Pursuant to her wishes there will be no funeral. Donations in Noreen’s memory can be made to the Cochrane Pregnancy Care Centre, www.cochranepreg.com and Foothills Country Hospice Foundation, www.countryhospice.org.

In living memory of Noreen Mitton, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Park Memorial, 5008 Elbow Drive SW, Calgary, AB, T2S 2L5, Telephone: 403-243-8200.

Condolences for the family of “MITTON, Noreen Audrey”

Condolence from Carol Tucker on April 20th, 2019 9:26 PM

My thoughts and prayers are with all the family at this sad time. The last few months were a struggle but she fought a good fight. She will be missed. May she rest in peace.
Sincerely

Condolence from Lee Hunt on April 26th, 2019 11:59 AM

To Noreen’s Family,
My condolences in the loss of Noreen.
Noreen was such an intelligent, friendly person. We first met working elections in Brentwood where she dealt so well with the voters and with her colleagues. A few years later, we met up again through the Knitting Group at Carroll Place. If I recall correctly, Noreen told me that she had not done any knitting before moving to Carroll Place, but had learned quickly. The words “elegance and grace” used in the obituary describe Noreen so exceptionally well. She was indeed one of a kind and will be missed. Lee Hunt
