MITCHELL, Mary Elizabeth (Ward)

February 24, 1935 – Bethany, Manitoba
April 22, 2019 – Calgary, Alberta

Mary Mitchell of Calgary, AB passed away on Monday, April 22, 2019 at the age of 84 years.

Mary happily enjoyed her retirement for many years. She was full of energy and always on the go. Mary loved to read and she had an incredible memory for learning. She also loved curling and golfing and was also a formidable opponent at both darts and crib. She enjoyed camping, playing horseshoe and keeping a keen eye out for landscapes to paint. Mary was a talented artist when it came to painting, singing and playing guitar. Curling was one of Mary’s passions, not only did she curl for many years she also travelled to several world championship events. You better believe no one ever changed the channel when curling was on TV! For nearly 50 years Mary was a proud member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles.

Mary’s most memorable vacations were when she went back to her childhood home on the farm. We went back many summers to spend time with family and friends. She loved to share stories of life on the farm growing up.
Mary lived by The Golden Rule, and this quote was spoken by her frequently “Do unto others as you would have others do unto you”.
She will be most remembered for her heart and generosity. She loved unconditionally; our home was filled with family and friends who knew they were always welcome. She was a great listener when you needed some advice or a friendly ear. She also was known for speaking her mind so you learned not to ask for her opinion unless you truly wanted to hear the answer. She gave it to you straight up for sure. She had no patience for dishonesty or people who weren’t genuine. She was a great hostess and an awesome cook. Her chocolate cake is legendary among those who had the opportunity to enjoy a piece or two. It never lasted long. She was a wonderful wife and mother and will be greatly missed! We love you Mom! XO

Mary will be lovingly remembered by her daughter and son-in-law, Heather and Darren of Calgary; two sons and daughter-in-law, Ken and Jayne of Cochrane and Alan of Calgary; four grandchildren, Nicki and Derek of Okotoks, Jennifer and Richard of Cochrane, Pamela and Jeff of Calgary and Kaynen of Calgary; she is also survived by her cat Mr. Dinkus; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Mary was predeceased by her husband W. G. Bob Mitchell and her parents, Annie and Oscar Ward.

A Celebration of Mary’s life will be held at the Fraternal Order of Eagles (9303 – 5th Street SE Calgary, AB ) on Sunday, June 2, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. Condolences may be forwarded through We would like to thank everyone involved with Mary’s care while she was in Unit 74 at the Rockyview General Hospital. Your care, compassion, respect and understanding meant more than you could know. We are truly grateful for the excellent care our Mom received. Her last days were a gift we had together that you all helped to make very special.

In living memory of Mary Mitchell, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Fish Creek, 14441 Bannister Road SE, Calgary, AB, T2X 3J3, Telephone: 403-256-9575.
