Ralph Miller passed away on Tuesday, March 27, 2018 at the age of 88 years.

Born in Calgary on February 4, 1930, Ralph graduated Western Canada High School in 1949. He obtained his B.A. and M.A. in English from U of A in 1952 and 1959. Ralph received his M.A. from Yale in 1954 on a Ford Fellowship and his Doctorate in Education from UCLA in 1967. He taught at Crescent Heights and Henry Wisewood High Schools. Ralph was a Professor of Education at U of C 1965-93. During part of that time, he was Department Head and Associate Dean. Ralph and family lived in Ottawa 1969-71 while he was an educational consultant for Canadian International Development Agency. He was a chairman of the Calgary School Board 1982-83. Condolence from Fred and Billie Scott on April 2nd, 2018 10:25 PM

Our days together in the Phi Kap fraternity house during our university days were among the treasures of my life and Ralph (I guess it will all come out because his eloquence earned him the nickname “gas” which he endured with indignity since he knew that people were taking in his witticism with an open mind). In the days after graduation our paths did not cross due often, I regret; I suppose that being a legal hack did not mix well with higher philosophical utterances so the occasional gatherings of the brethran were the common forum to magnify the hy-jinks that accompanied our perceptions of life and those are a balm to our memories. May the good Lord roll out the red carpet for you , Ruth and Ralph. I shall continue bemoaning the loss of another one of my “few remaining friends” but if everyone refrains from relating my campus cut-ups to the powers above, we shall rebuild again the years of our youth with joy. May God bless.

Condolence from Neil Hughes on August 25th, 2018 3:03 PM

Greg, Jeanne, Lorraine, and families:

We saw the notice of your dad’s death in the latest U. of A. New Trail magazine, and only after finding his obituary online did we learn of your mom’s passing in 2017. Your mom was one of our mom’s (Gwen (Sinclair) Hughes’s) dearest friends, and one of her bridesmaids when our parents Gwen & Walter Hughes were married in 1953. (Actually, your maternal grandparents were also good friends of our own, Gordon and Irene Sinclair. I–this is Neil talking now–remember your grandfather Charlie Gauld and his mellifluous Scottish brogue very well to this day; he would often greet me in the narthex at First Baptist Church in Edmonton when I was a child.) Mom was very fond of your dad Ralph, too, and I know she would have had many kind things to say about both of them at these sad occasions had she not predeceased them in 2012. So on behalf of our mother Gwen, our thoughts are very much with you, and we know you will remain very proud of both your accomplished parents for the rest of your days.

Neil Hughes (Athens, Ga., USA)
Elaine Hughes (Victoria, BC)
Robert Hughes (Calgary, AB)
