METCALFE, Margaret Louise (nee Dearden)

March 31, 1927 – Sherbrooke, Quebec

November 12, 2018 – Calgary, Alberta

On Monday, November 12th, 2018, after 91 years, Margaret was taken into the loving arms of her Lord with family by her side.

Margaret was born in Sherbrooke, Quebec to Vera (nee Hughes) and Francis (Frank) Dearden. She grew up on a farm with her six siblings, Ted, Barney, Dorothy (Canning), Alice (Kinnear), Mary Lou (Millar), and Tom, graduated from the East Angus High School and attended secretarial school before landing her first job in the accounts dept at the pulp mill in East Angus. In 1947, when her sister’s family was being transferred to Winnipeg, Margaret took over Dorothy’s secretarial position at MacDonald College in Montreal for the next three years. There she met and married the love of her life, Alex, who was studying horticulture after returning from the war overseas. In 1951, upon graduation, Alex drove out west to seek new opportunities and Margaret soon followed with their first son, Eric (1951). They settled in Lethbridge where Margaret continued as a devoted wife, homemaker and mother of three more children: Robert (1953), Joan (1954) and Barb (1956). In 1961, the family moved to Calgary where Alex began his long career with Calgary Power/Trans Alta. Margaret once again settled into a new community and congregation. Soon after, they all welcomed Wendy (1962) as the newest member of the family. In 1970, with her children growing more independent, Margaret became a certified School Assistant, working at Killarney School for a few years. With five growing children, the house in Glenbrook and then Scarboro was full of activity: church, Scouts, choir, CGIT, piano lessons, sports and long family road trips; creating many fond memories. Margaret took to caring for her family like all tasks she took on: conscientious, organized, and giving her all.

Margaret’s love for God, her family and the church were always central to her purpose in life. When time allowed she volunteered and became a lifelong supporter of many organizations: the Presbyterian churches the family attended in Lethbridge (St. Andrew’s), Edmonton (First Presbyterian) and Calgary (Knox and Grace), many parent councils, the Red Cross, United Way, Heart & Stroke and the Conservative Party.

Margaret was the beloved wife of Alexander L Metcalfe for almost sixty years, loving mother to Eric (Rachel Lundstrom), Robert (Georgina Da Silva), Joan (Bob Little), Barb (Jamie Tait) and Wendy (Craig Barker); “Grandma” to her twelve grandchildren, Curtis, Evan, Jenny, Stephanie, Lena, Jackie, Dylan, Colin, Darryl, Erin, Scott, and Erika; and “GG” to her great-grandchildren, Mila, Nina, Lara, Seqkoa, Toby, Tiago, and Lowen. Margaret is also survived by her youngest brother, Thomas (Tom) Dearden (Pauline), sister-in-law Joan Dearden, brother-in-law Jim Millar as well as many nieces, nephews and their families.

At Margaret’s request, a memorial service will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY (Park Memorial, 5008 Elbow Drive S.W., Calgary, AB) on Saturday, November 17, 2018 at 2:00 p.m.  with a committal service to follow at Queen’s Park Cemetery.  A reception will follow in the social room at the Royal Oak Condominiums for family and friends to come and celebrate a life well lived.
