MERKLEY, Violette Marie

January 16, 1931 – Edmonton, Alberta
April 16, 2018 – Calgary, Alberta

Violette, our dear mother, grandmother and great-grandmother left us to be in God’s care on Monday, April 16, 2018 at the age of 87 years.

Violette was born in Edmonton, Alberta but spent much of her childhood in Hanna, while her father worked the rail lines. She married her husband Donald in 1951 and was thereafter devoted to running the Merkley household in Calgary. Mom’s lifelong heart problems peaked in the late seventies, with her eventually having two valve replacements and repairs. Despite what seemed to many as an almost constant state of failing health, she was steadfast in her position as matriarch of the Merkley clan, never missing a family gathering or party. In her later years, Violette was the caregiver for her husband Donald as he developed Alzheimer’s until the work became too much for one person to handle. Violette, along with her husband Donald, were renowned faceters and amateur gemologists in the Calgary area. They were both life-long members of the Alberta Facetor’s Guild and recognized as “Life-Members” of the Calgary Rock and Lapidary Club. The children recount the numerous camping and rock-collecting adventures in BC, AB and the U.S. with smiles and warm memories, despite the odd complaint from some of the siblings of “child labour!!”. After Dad’s retirement, he and Violette started “DonVi Ventures” where they traveled to numerous rock shows around western Canada to display their cut stones and lapidary work. Violette moved into the Auburn Heights Retirement Residences in 2016 and quickly became a known fixture among the staff and residents for her tenaciousness and “wicked” sense of humour. She was often seen painting, creating crafts, and even learning to play the ukulele! The family would like to express their deep thanks for the excellent care and friendships she developed at Auburn Heights.

Violette is survived by her six children, Elizabeth and her husband Ken Middleton, Mark Merkley, Gay and her husband Ron Peake, Tim and his wife Roxanne Merkley, Paul and his wife Dorothy Merkley, Donette and her husband Kevin Jackson, all of Calgary; her ten grandchildren Tamara Le Vesconte of Calgary, Shawn (Maria) Middleton of Calgary, Adam Peake of Calgary, Christopher (Brittany) Merkley of Calgary, Samantha Peake of Vancouver, Sarah (Ray) Krohmer of Calgary, Nicholas Peake of Calgary, Crystal Jackson of Calgary, Matt Merkley of Calgary, and Kathleen Merkley of Calgary; and her three great-grandchildren, Aidan Le Vesconte, Kaelan Le Vesconte, and Teagan Middleton; as well as numerous sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews.

Violette was predeceased by her daughter, Laurie-Anne in 1957; her father, Albertus (Albert) Daem in 1973; her mother, Elizabeth in 1999; her brother Gerry Daem in 2010; and her loving husband Donald Francis in 2016.

Relatives and friends are invited to Prayers and Tributes at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY (Chapel of the Bells, 2720 Centre Street North, Calgary, AB) on Sunday, April 22, 2018 at 7:00 p.m.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Pius X Catholic Church (2424 – 24th Avenue N.W., Calgary, AB) on Monday, April 23, 2018 at 10:00 a.m. Reception to follow at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY (Crowfoot, 82 Crowfoot Circle N.W., Calgary, AB). Condolences may be forwarded through
