April 30, 1948 – Guelph, Ontario
March 24, 2019 – Calgary, Alberta
It is with great sadness and much love we announce the sudden passing of Ron Medley on Sunday, March 24 at the age of 70 years.
Ron, also known as “Med” to many close friends and family, was born on April 30th, 1948 in Guelph, Ontario where he grew up with his beloved little sister Mary Margaret. It was in Guelph, at the age of 15, that he met Marianne, the love of his life, who he married in 1970. During their early years together, he attended Laurentian University and then transferred to the University of Ottawa where he completed his civil engineering degree. Ron and Marianne’s daughter, Sara, was born in 1975 and their son, John, in 1979. During those years, Ron started his working career at the Ministry of Transport then the Department of Public Works, Gulf Oil, Petro Canada, SAP, and finally Sensimatics. Together, the Medleys had many exciting adventures as Ron’s career took them from Ontario to Calgary, to North Vancouver, to Calgary, to White Rock, and back to Calgary. Eventually, Ron decided the weekly cross-country commutes to Stellarton and Montreal were becoming a bit much and they were certainly interfering with his busy golf schedule at his beloved Bearspaw, so he retired again. This would be his final exit from a working world where he made several life long friends and was highly regarded. It was not a coincidence that his retirement also aligns with the arrival of his grandkids, Sophie (2008) and Luke (2010), and words simply can’t explain the love he felt for them.
Throughout his life, Ron curled, downhill skied, and played baseball and basketball with his kids and grandkids but the activity that truly allowed him to settle into retirement was golf. He especially loved playing with the “Dirty Dozen” and having his Sunday morning skins game at Bearspaw, where he’s been a member since 1998. Between rounds of golf, Ron and Marianne travelled the world together and have had many adventures with their wonderful friends.
Ron was a compassionate man driven by integrity, conviction, loyalty, and love. His sharp wit and sense of humour will be missed. Ron was happiest when he was with his family and was an amazing husband, father, and “Gramps”.
Ron is survived by his loving wife Marianne, son John, daughter Sara and her husband, Mike Nielsen. He was also loved immensely by his grandchildren, Sophie and Luke. He was the beloved brother-in-law to Rob & Sue, Janet & Chuck, Rick & Verna (deceased),Steve , Peg & Dave and Elaine. He was also a loving uncle and great uncle to his nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Richard and Margaret Medley and his little sister Mary Margaret.
