MEDLEY, Ronald (Ron) Brian

April 30, 1948 – Guelph, Ontario
March 24, 2019 – Calgary, Alberta

It is with great sadness and much love we announce the sudden passing of Ron Medley on Sunday, March 24 at the age of 70 years.

Ron, also known as “Med” to many close friends and family, was born on April 30th, 1948 in Guelph, Ontario where he grew up with his beloved little sister Mary Margaret. It was in Guelph, at the age of 15, that he met Marianne, the love of his life, who he married in 1970. During their early years together, he attended Laurentian University and then transferred to the University of Ottawa where he completed his civil engineering degree. Ron and Marianne’s daughter, Sara, was born in 1975 and their son, John, in 1979. During those years, Ron started his working career at the Ministry of Transport then the Department of Public Works, Gulf Oil, Petro Canada, SAP, and finally Sensimatics. Together, the Medleys had many exciting adventures as Ron’s career took them from Ontario to Calgary, to North Vancouver, to Calgary, to White Rock, and back to Calgary. Eventually, Ron decided the weekly cross-country commutes to Stellarton and Montreal were becoming a bit much and they were certainly interfering with his busy golf schedule at his beloved Bearspaw, so he retired again. This would be his final exit from a working world where he made several life long friends and was highly regarded. It was not a coincidence that his retirement also aligns with the arrival of his grandkids, Sophie (2008) and Luke (2010), and words simply can’t explain the love he felt for them.
Throughout his life, Ron curled, downhill skied, and played baseball and basketball with his kids and grandkids but the activity that truly allowed him to settle into retirement was golf. He especially loved playing with the “Dirty Dozen” and having his Sunday morning skins game at Bearspaw, where he’s been a member since 1998. Between rounds of golf, Ron and Marianne travelled the world together and have had many adventures with their wonderful friends.
Ron was a compassionate man driven by integrity, conviction, loyalty, and love. His sharp wit and sense of humour will be missed. Ron was happiest when he was with his family and was an amazing husband, father, and “Gramps”.

Ron is survived by his loving wife Marianne, son John, daughter Sara and her husband, Mike Nielsen. He was also loved immensely by his grandchildren, Sophie and Luke. He was the beloved brother-in-law to Rob & Sue, Janet & Chuck, Rick & Verna (deceased),Steve , Peg & Dave and Elaine. He was also a loving uncle and great uncle to his nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Richard and Margaret Medley and his little sister Mary Margaret.

Funeral Services will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY (Crowfoot, 82 Crowfoot Circle NW, Calgary, AB), on Tuesday, April 2, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to Crohn’s and Colitis Canada,

In living memory of Ron Medley, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Crowfoot, 82 CROWFOOT CIRCLE NW, CALGARY, AB T3G 2T3, Telephone: 403-241-0044.

Condolence Messages

  1. My deepest condolences to the Medley family. I got to know Ron during his time at SAP. Ron became a great friend and someone who I always enjoyed spending time together. We would typically be found laughing about our sales pursuits over multiple scotches. Ron was always such a wonderful story teller and quick with his sharp witted humour. So many great memories of Ron living his life to the fullest. You will be missed my, dear friend. Rest In Peace, Ron.

Marianne and family….please accept our sympathies. I recall meeting twenty year old Ron at our first Laurentian Engineering class in 1968. We were a tight knit group for several years, attended your wedding in Guelph and then went in different directions chasing careers and raising families until we met up 40 some years later for the 2017 Deerhurst reunion (see photo). Ron was still Ron with the same smile, quick wit and engaging personality. Jo-Ann and I feel so grateful for that opportunity to meet you all again after so many years.

Marianne & amp; Family, we were saddened to hear the passing of Ron. Not only was Ron a great husband and father, he was also a good and caring neighbor. We remembered there were a couple of times where my sister didn’t have time to do her front yard and Ron was there to help out-before we even got there. He will be greatly missed. Marianne, Sara, Mike, and John.
I find it nearly impossible to have to say good bye to my near lifelong friend, Med.
Med was born just 40 days before me in Guelph, Ont in 1948.
We both turned 70 this past year.
Med and I became great friends in 7th grade when I was 12 or so. That would be 58 years that I’ve had my friend.
When we were kids and teenagers, Med and I were together every day and he was like a brother to me. His family was like a family to me when I needed one and I know they influenced my life.
Even later when we were farther away I knew in my heart that I always still had a very best friend.
Med was warm and smart, understanding and practical, sociable and caring, and fun.
Monica and I, Matt, Jay, and Ashley all got to know your family very well and we know you will miss him immensely. We will too.
We are so thankful for such a great friendship and so grateful for such wonderful endless memories.
    Love to you all,
    Pete & Monica Ferraro

I knew Ron during his Petro Canada and SAP years. He was one of the best leaders that I have ever had the pleasure to work for. Always warm, well humored and inspiring. I’ll be thinking of Ron today at 2 o’clock in absence of attendance and send my sympathy for his family and friends that had the fortune of having such a wonderful person in their lives!

  29. So very sorry to hear about Ron’s passing. I had the pleasure of working with Ron when he was head of TBA (Tires, Batteries and Accessories) for Western Canada. to say the least it was quite a ride, we worked hard and played hard and had a lot of fun and success along the way. Sara you might not remember but I was afraid that Ron might fire me once when you babysat our daughter Eryn for us the first time and I didn’t get you home until after 3 in the morning! But alas Ron spared me and allowed me to have a long and successful career with Petro-Canada.

  32. My fond memories of Uncle Med start right at the beginning from when he would squeeze my knees or tickle me until I couldn’t breathe, only to run right back into the “danger zone” as soon as I’d caught my breath. Then there’s the infamous fridge magnets. And then I got to see him beam with pride at Sara’s wedding, not to mention countless life lessons in between. But, I think my strongest memory is when I really had real one on one time with my Uncle Med for the first time over a meal at Nick’s, because after that I was absolutely sure I could call him a friend as well as an Uncle. He will always be loved and always be missed.
Sending all of my love to you Marianne, John, Sara, Mike, Soph and Luke.
