MEDINA, Katherine Fia

April 25, 1935 – Regina, Saskatchewan
November 14, 2018 – Calgary, Alberta

Katherine Medina of Calgary, AB, passed away on Wednesday, November 14, 2018 at the age of 83 years following a brief illness.

Katherine was born in Regina, SK, though she lived in the little town of Milestone, SK as a little girl. Her father was a country doctor there and Katherine relayed many stories of accompanying him on his home visits in those early days – often assisting in small ways! Katherine was a very talented writer. She recently wrote a wonderful memoir of her time with the people in Milestone. In addition to her gift as a writer, she expressed her creativity as an artist. Though she worked for many years as a court reporter, here in Calgary, her love for the arts led her to obtaining a degree in Fine Arts at age sixty from the University of Calgary. Katherine was in her glory in the world of academia. She often spoke about her inspired conversations with favorite professors. Katherine really lived by the old adage – “How old would you be if you didn’t know how old you were?” She was very knowledgeable about so many things – sharing little known details about everything from famous people to the latest gadgets. Katherine had a fierce love for “the Royals” and often spoke of them as if they were family! In her final days, she delighted in the latest word on Prince Harry and Meghan’s baby news. Prior to the mid 90’s, Katherine would be known to others as Joan Tyreman. This birth name never sat well with Katherine. Thus her decision to claim the name that felt like the perfect fit – Katherine Fia Medina – influenced by her early adult years when she lived with a family in Mexico City. She loved the Hispanic culture and spoke fluent Spanish.

Katherine will be deeply missed by her family of choice – Sandy Forsyth, Diane Monteith and son, Matt. We are so grateful for the compassion and care that Katherine received from the staff on 2 East at the Glenmore Park RCTP as well as the team in the ICU at the Rockyview Hospital. We also wish to thank Debbie, her apartment manager who went above and beyond to support Katherine prior to her admission to hospital.

A Graveside Service will be held on Thursday, November 29, 2018 at 10:00 a.m. at Queen’s Park Cemetery. We invite those of you who knew Katherine to raise her up in your thoughts and prayers. Katherine, dear one, rest in peace knowing that – “You are not a drop in the ocean. You are the entire ocean, in a drop.” Rumi. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.

In living memory of Katherine Medina, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Park Memorial, 5008 Elbow Drive S.W., Calgary, AB, T2S 2L5, Telephone: 403-243-8200.

  1. Irene Pedersen :

I had the good fortune of recently meeting and spending time with Katherine. I am grateful for the conversations; her wry wit and observations made my days better. Her sense of the ridiculous was well honed, we laughed hysterically over an imagined peanut butter and marmalade riot. I will miss her.
