McVEIGH, George (Barry)

February 1, 1931 – Antler, Saskatchewan
April 1, 2019 – Calgary, Alberta

It is with deep sadness that our family announces the passing of our dear husband, father and grandfather, George Barry McVeigh, at the Colonel Belcher Veteran’s Care Home on Monday, April 1, 2019.

Barry was born in Antler, Saskatchewan, but as a young man moved with his family to Thunder Bay and then Winnipeg. Barry married the love of his life, Lorna, in August 1958 and the two of them were blessed with three children, Cameron, Cathryn and Colleen. Barry was employed with the Winnipeg Fire Department from March 1956 to March 1988, retiring after thirty-two years of faithful service as a Captain. Barry and Lorna retired to Victoria, British Columbia in 1994 and resided there for twelve years. In 2006, they made a final retirement move to Calgary to be with all their children and grandchildren. Barry was so full of life and embraced every day of his 88 years of life with great compassion. He was so committed to his family; he loved his wife, children and grandchildren with all his heart. All made him so proud and he loved to spend time with each and every one of them. Barry enjoyed many hobbies including fishing at Big White Shell Lake, curling, travelling, music and growing the most beautiful flowers at home.

Left to cherish Barry’s memory are his wife Lorna of sixty years; his children, son Cameron (Shelley) McVeigh, daughter Cathryn McVeigh, daughter Colleen (Richard) Keller. Also mourning Barry’s passing are his five grandchildren, Sarah (Ezekiel) Shia, Chelsea Keller, Keenan McVeigh, Riley McVeigh and Chanel Brisard-McVeigh.

A private Celebration of Life was held. Condolences may be forwarded through

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Winnipeg Firefighters Burn Fund: 303-83 Garry Street, Winnipeg, Manitoba, R3C 479.

A special thank you from our family to the Staff at Colonel Belcher Veteran’s Care Home for the excellent care, love and compassion for the past two years.

“Papa, may you rest in peace. We loved you so much. Lovingly remembered and never forgotten.”

In living memory of Barry McVeigh, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Chapel of the Bells, 2720 CENTRE STREET NORTH, CALGARY, AB, T2E 2V6, Telephone: 403-243-8200.

  2. My condolences to Cam and his family on the passing of Mr. McVeigh. Cam was my neighbor for several years and I spent many hours over at the McVeigh household playing snooker. Mr. McVeigh was always giving me fatherly advice at a tough time in my youth and I always look back fondly to my friendship with Cam and his great parents and family. I was a young man but still could see what a great man Mr. McVeigh was and certainly he had a positive influence on my young life. I thank him and his family for those great years and welcoming hospitality. I wish I could have know him as an adult. Thanks “Mr McVeigh”. One good man! Howie.
