MCPHEE, John Melvin

March 17, 1935 – Nakusp, British Columbia
January 22, 2019 – Calgary, Alberta

Mel McPhee, beloved husband of Donna McPhee (nee Peterson) of Calgary, AB passed away on January 22, 2019 at the age of 83 years.

Mel was born on St. Patrick’s Day in 1935 at Nakusp, BC. Mel was brought up in Vernon, BC, and served with his brother Terry with the Army Cadets for two years, before joining the RCMP at the age of 18. Mel took a Northern posting after training in Regina. He met Donna Peterson, an RN, in Edmonton in 1957 and they were married in Skagway, Alaska on March 19, 1959. Their son Jim was born in Whitehorse in 1962, and from then Mel took postings in Baffin Island, Pangnirtung, Cape Dorset, and then to Saskatchewan where he retired from the force in Kamsack after twenty-four years of service. Mel then joined the WCB in Edmonton and worked as an Investigator for twenty years before retiring in Calgary. Mel loved helping people, whether taking them to appointments or volunteering with a variety of groups such as the Lions, the RCMP Vet’s or at Fort Calgary. He died January 22, 2019, after battling heart disease for many years.

A Celebration of Mel’s Life will be held at Royal Canadian Legion, Centennial Branch 285 (9202 Horton Road SW, Calgary, AB) on Thursday, February 7, 2019 from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.

We would like to thank the Foothills Medical Centre, Rockyview General and South Health Campus hospitals, especially unit #58 of the Holy Cross where Mel spent the last few weeks receiving excellent care and compassion.
