McMURRAY, Jonathan James (Jon James)

July 28, 1984 – Calgary, Alberta
October 20, 2018 – Vernon, British Columbia

Jonathan James McMurray beloved son of Jennifer and Douglas McMurray and brother to Jarrod, passed away on Saturday, October 20, 2018 at the age of 34 years.

Jon began his artistic journey at the age of six, performing the piano at senior homes with his little brother. Their passion for sharing and entertaining was immediate. That same year, they began skiing every weekend at Lake Louise. Music and sport came naturally to them as they started to realize the power and beauty of self expression. This discovery of creativity soared Jon through the rest of his life.

With the love and full support of his parents, they were the foundation on which Jon began to build his dreams. They quickly bought a home video camera and started filming their weekend mountain adventures. This was the catalyst for Jon’s career. He saw the potential in sharing his adventures and this camera quickly fell into his youthful hands. The filming continued for the rest of his life.

Never a follower, Jon questioned everything and authority in all areas of life were simply an afterthought for him.

He produced two full length ski and stunt films by the time he was seventeen years old, which included all of his talents and antics from skiing, music, rapping, skateboarding, stunts, jumping off houses into bushes, and always intertwined with random and hilarious skits featuring his personally assembled group of best friends. They were a unit and Jon was the leader. The glue. The nucleus. The sun.

His best friends, Rory Bushfield, Chris Biollo and Daniel Campos, formed through a mutual passion for skiing and adventure, were renowned for their talents and almost feared by some for their rebellious but good natured antics. Jon always encouraged and included his little brother Jarrod in all of their adventures.

After developing their talents throughout their teen years, the group was rewarded with professional sponsorships and invitations to the worlds most prestigious ski events. Jon began travelling internationally and became known as an innovator in the professional ski world, and he always did things his own way. By age 19, Jon had become a household name in the ski industry. Due to their unique skill sets and strong air sense, both Jon and Chris accepted an opportunity to work as ski entertainers in a cross-country traveling circus.

However his ambitions could never be quenched. His early love and true calling of music came roaring back and he decided he was going to walk away from everything he had built up to this point in order to realize his true potential. In true Jon style, he threw himself one hundred percent into his new focus. He immediately began attracting the most ambitious local rap artists and musicians to collaborate with. He was at the centre of it all and always leading the pack. It was his enthusiasm, determination and positivity that attracted people to Jon.
He saw the vision and potential in himself, and in his team like no one else and everyone thrived on his energy and talents.

They began performing locally, and soon after, were sharing the stage with some of the biggest hip hop artists in the world. He had only scraped the surface. Jon’s vision was growing everyday. He saw the potential in combining all of his talents into the world’s only professional athlete, stunt artist and musician. There was not a minute wasted.
He relocated to Los Angeles to find inspiration, refuge and focus to compete for the spotlight internationally. This is where he met and married Kaliane. In the last years of his life, he executed some of the most unique extreme stunts ever done, always while performing his music simultaneously. He was a regular member of extreme sports group Nitro Circus. He performed numerous times at some of the biggest music festivals including Kelowna’s Centre of Gravity. If he wasn’t writing or performing music, he was editing footage, planning a video shoot or physically and mentally training for his next stunt. With thousands of followers and well over a million video views and song plays, Jon James was emerging onto the international music scene fully formed.

Despite all of Jon’s extraordinary achievements, what he will be remembered for the most is his ability to express his love to his family, friends and anyone he met in his journeys. He was able to combine confidence with humility like no one else. When he walked into the room, you couldn’t help but notice. His positivity was infectious. His laugh undeniably contagious. He gave love to everyone. He was completely focused on his mission while also being one hundred percent compassionate for everyone around him. Within minutes of meeting him, he could draw you in and connect with you on the deepest level. He will be remembered most as a beautiful loving son, amazingly nurturing brother and friend to absolutely everyone.

What began as a love for music and sport, transformed into a life-long journey of ultimate self-expression, self-actualization and a vision to inspire the world.

Jonathan is survived by his mother Jennifer McMurray (Ted Pound), father Doug McMurray, younger brother Jarrod, wife Kaliane, grandmother Isabell, aunts, uncles and cousins.

  2. I’d never heard of nor previously known Jon prior to his flight out of Vernon. He spoke with me briefly before boarding the Cessna, and seemed really happy and excited all at the same time. He gave me a thumbs up signal and as I smiled back at him I stepped towards him with arms open wide. I embraced him as if my own son and whispered ‘be safe’. He was a bit taken from my embrace but smiled and signaling ‘it’s all good’.
Since the accident I’ve researched his profile coming across a photo with his mom and the most beautiful words he’d posted about her. That showed beyond doubt to a “stranger” that he had a good heart full of love. I can’t believe he’s gone, moments before he was so full of life, young, energetic and happy. My heart aches for the family, for the loss of such a wonderful son and husband. God give all of you His Peace, in this hour of need.

  4. I am sorry for your loss. Jon was my coach about ten years ago. He had an incredible quality where he was able to make me feel proud of my accomplishments, even when I bit the dust. At the same time, Jon was always encouraging me to take the next step, and go bigger. Jon helped me believe in myself. He was an incredibly kind person, and it was a joy to learn from him.

  8. I’m so sorry for your loss.
He was an amazing person, I knew him from grade school, we went to St. Luke’s and we were each other’s first kiss in grade 4.
When we went skiing in Canada Olympic Park, he would jump off chairlifts and he was so much fun. He was a kind, wonderful person with so much talent. I’ll never forget him and his smile.
    Heaven has gained an angel

  11. I never met Jon, so all I know of him is what his brother has told me. Over the years, hearing how Jarrod spoke about him was more like hearing a little kid speak of their best friend, or perhaps even their hero. There’s always been a level of awe and amazement behind everything Jarrod has ever mentioned about his brother. You can tell he genuinely looked up to him on a very real level. All I know, is that even as someone who didn’t personally know him, the world has felt different since his passing. My chest aches for his family and friends. I hope you all feel supported and heard. Endless love to everyone.

  12. Mark and Liliana :

I’m so sorry for your loss. I have followed Jonathan’s career since he formed LCP as well as his skiing career. He was just really starting to find his groove. I liked some of the songs he was putting out, along with Jarrod’s as well. Just letting the family know we are thinking of you during this time. We will miss him even though we did not get to know him except through his music and videos. You could say I was more of a fan than a cousin. Our hearts go out Doug, Jennifer, Jarrod, Aunt Isabell, Cym, Lisa, Robert, Richard, Kaliane and his other family of close friends.
    Take Care,
May You All Find Peace One Day.
Mark, Liliana, Steven, Justin, Ashley, Alyssa, and Seth.

It was always great to see him and talk about the new adventures he had on the go. I was fortunate enough to know his father (Doug) as well and what a proud man when talking about Jon. 22. What a beautiful tribute written about his life’s journey. Thank you for sharing it with the world so they can know him and understand him the way those who were close to him did. May his mother, father, brother, wife, family and all his loved ones be comforted in knowing that he touched so many. I (as many others) affectionately called him McFee. I met him many years ago through my older brother. This past summer, McFee rolled into my mom’s house wearing his fur coat and a huge smile! We all embraced, took pics and it was only a few minutes of catching up, but I was happy to have seen him after so many years. He was a beautiful person and will be missed by all who were fortunate enough to be in his presence. God bless you all.
