McLEOD, Margaret Ellen (Nee Gilchrist)

June 24, 1928 – September 6, 2018

It is with great sadness that we announce our beloved mother, Margaret Ellen McLeod, of Calgary, AB, passed away peacefully on September 6, 2018 at the age of 90 years.

Margaret was born in Vancouver, BC, where she spent her early years. She graduated from St. Paul’s Hospital in Vancouver as a nurse. She married her beloved husband Hugh (Ewen) McLeod on January 5, 1954, and they spent many years in Edmonton raising their three children until relocating to Calgary in 1974, where Margaret had resided since.

A very caring, strong and independent woman, Margaret loved to host and entertain and take part in many social activities such as playing bridge and crib, attending church and Texaco Elderstar events. She also enjoyed spending time cooking, gardening, knitting, and travelling. Margaret treasured her loving family and lifelong friends; one of her greatest joys was spending time with them.

Margaret lives on in the memory of her children and their spouses, Barbara and Craig Kimler, Neil and Heather McLeod, Hugh and Wendy McLeod; grandchildren, Brett, Megan and Mark, Steven and Jenn, Thomas, and Justin; great-grandchildren, Laelith, Xylia, Ethan, and Emily; sister, Jane Gilchrist.

Margaret was predeceased by her devoted husband, Hugh (Ewen), on January 25, 1985; parents, Neil and Elsie Gilchrist; as well as her sister, Barbara Teahen.

Funeral Services will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY (Chapel of the Bells, 2720 Centre Street North, Calgary, AB), on Monday, September 17, 2018 at 2:00p.m. Reception to follow.

  9. I will always treasure my times spent with Marg when I was the Minister at Wild Rose United Church. Marg could always be counted on to lend a hand, prepare a casserole, visit someone who was lonely and grieving. It was in her DNA to care for others and all of us at Wild Rose were blessed by her strong spiritual presence among us. You planted gardens of love during your time on this earth, Marg. Rest gently now, good friend, and enjoy your reunion with Hugh. Much love, (Rev.) Linda Hunter

  18. Thank you for your thoughtful obituary with lovely photo of Margaret in the Calgary Herald! To me she was always “Mrs. McLeod”, a long-time neighbour of ours living down the street in Cambrian Heights. Years ago when canvassing for charities was popular, your mom was always a generous donor and I very much enjoyed my talks with her. She was also a very good friend to my Aunt Mary Paul, also deceased, and the two of them often enjoyed their outings together to the Cannon’s baseball games & likely other ticketed events. Even when she moved away from our district, I would still see her from time to time at the Cambrian drug store and enjoy chatting with her. No doubt she and Aunt Mary will find lots to do wherever they are now! Best wishes to all of you and know that loving moms like yours are always close by!
With love & sympathy on the passing of a wonderful soul, Marlene Harris

  19. We were so sorry to hear about Margaret’s passing. Pam and I live on the same floor as Margaret and we spent many hours with her catching up in the hallway or walking the pathways with her. She always had a story to tell and we both appreciated her upbeat attitude (and love for ice-cream). Margaret always treated our dogs as beautiful creatures and she will be sorely missed as our neighbour and friend. Our sincere condolences to her family.

  20. So pleased I had a chance to spend a few hours with Marg when visiting for her 90th. She was in full spirit and surrounded by all her family and their many children. It was a great day well remembered in photographs and much laughter.
A good run for all the roses and many a story told and re-told. She was a pistol of a lady and I will always think of her most fondly. My sincere condolences to all her family for their loss, she will be missed.
