McLEAN, Ward Gilbert

January 6, 1945 – Halifax, Nova Scotia
May 5, 2019 – Calgary, Alberta

Ward McLean, beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend, passed away on May 5, 2019 with his loving wife and his three boys at his bedside after living with Alzheimer’s for eight years.

Born in Halifax and raised in Calgary, Ward was an accomplished athlete in many sports including hockey, racquet sports, sailing, windsurfing, cycling, hunting and fishing. He loved to throw himself into hobbies such as raising and breeding Springer Spaniels for hunting, building and flying model airplanes, and coaching hockey. While pursuing these interests he would always volunteer his time on various boards to better these groups, such as Pheasants Forever and his dog club. Coaching hockey was a love of his and it started with coaching his sons in Elbow Park. He went on to coach for about fifteen years, ranging in age groups from Atom up to Bantam AAA and even a short time with the Mount Royal Cougars. He loved the development aspect of hockey and working with kids. Ward was a Chartered Accountant and with this he had a great career at numerous companies over the years. Shortly after receiving his CA he worked for a sail boat company on their bankruptcy at which the owner wrote a poem, in part:

Here’s to our new skipper
His name is Ward McLean
Come to save our sinking ship…

Ward took this to heart throughout his life. His volunteer work over the years, alluded to the above, often related to his CA designation and he used his skills to help many groups.

He is survived by his wife, “Sweet” Lorraine; sons and daughters-in-law, Mat and Deanne, Jon and Rishma, and Dave and Eve; grandkids, Alexa and Luke, Liam and Sophie, Emily and Gabby; his sister and brothers, Mary, Stuart and Steve, and their families; along with numerous loved nieces and nephews.

Ward was predeceased by his parents, Ruby and Norman McLean.

We will miss you.

A celebration of Ward’s life will be held at the Southern Alberta Pioneers Memorial Building (3625 4th Street SW, Calgary, AB) on Thursday, May 9, 2019 from 2:00 to 5:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, memorial tributes may be made directly to The Alzheimer Society of Alberta and the Northwest Territories, Administrative Office, 10531 Kingsway Avenue, Edmonton AB T5H 4K1. Tel: (1-866) 950-5465, www.alzheimer.ab.ca. Condolences may be forwarded through www.McInnisandHolloway.com. Ward’s family would like to thank the staff at the Mount Royal Care Centre for their amazing compassion and care over the years.

In living memory of Ward McLean, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Park Memorial, 5008 Elbow Drive SW, Calgary, AB, T2S 2L5, Telephone: 403-243-8200.

  15. Lorraine and family. We were away in Victoria last week and at a dear friends funeral only to arrive home yesterday and read of Wards passing. These past few years I am sure have been difficult. He was a dear friend and I have many fond memories of the times I had with him. Ghost Lake, hunting with our sons and friends the Tilley Hotel and fishing on the Bow. I could go on and on. In whatever he did it was with passion weather it was raising and training the dogs, fly fishing, flying model airplanes, helping Pheasants Forever, playing hockey. We had many fun times together. Our thoughts are with you and the boys. Take care.

  17. Dear Lorraine and family,
I send my condolences upon hearing about Ward’s passing.
I feel like Ward has been part of my life ever since I can remember although always a little out of my reach being a little older than I was. He always was a real ‘jock’ and in the thick of antics and good fun with his buddies. He has left the world a better place with his significant contribution to many youth in this city and his other volunteer activities.
He will live on especially through his robust and energetic family, children and grandchildren.
    Afffectionately,
    Barbara (Shillington) Morin
