Dearest Gail , Sandy, Carole & Sylvia and all other family members of Elma – please accept our most sincere condolences on my FAV cousin’s sudden passing. Elma will live in our hearts forever with so many wonderful fun memories from my childhood till recently with her. Karen and I loved visiting with Elma frequently, usually bringing her the treats she so enjoyed , Timbits and a french vanilla from Timmies:) We always had so many great chuckles with her chatting about the fun times together over the years with her family and ours. Elma was always an inspiration for me and I told her that, as she was probably the most positive and always cheerful lady , even when she wasn’t feeling well , I have ever known! Karen and I will truly miss our ”coffee dates” with her, however we know she is God’s company now with our other relatives who she will now be with eternally having their coffee dates 🙂 God bless all of Elma’s family knowing our thoughts and prayers are with you during these difficult days! all our love – Cousin Tim, Karen & Kelly -Calgary

A Mother is usually at the centre of a family because of her special status and unique ability to cope with anything and everything that comes along in her family life. One subtle example of a Mother’s unique ability to cope, was when my Dad in post-war England often complained about how hard he had to work, to which my Mother always responded with, “you don’t know what hard work is until you have delivered a baby”. Only God knows now where my Mother got that expression from, but It did not take long for my Dad to cease complaining about how hard he had to work. It is with that sense of humour, I will always fondly remember our precious Elma. In over 50 years of knowing her I cannot think of a time when we were talking by phone or in person, where we did not have endless moments of genuine laughter. Although I left Calgary many years ago, I still vividly remember when I first met Elma in 1967 at the P. Lawson Travel office at 119 – 7th Avenue SW. I had been hired as a rookie Assistant Manager who thought he knew everything, but Elma amusingly and quite quickly put me straight on just about everything that happened in the office. To me Elma was a gem who was never afraid to speak her mind, but always managed to flavour her words with that magical humour which was a special character of hers.

The sudden and unexpected news of Elma leaving this life left me speechless when Gail phoned last Thursday, but now with each new day I feel much joy and gratefulness that Elma crossed my path of life and we stayed good friends for so many years. May you rest in peace old girl, at 88 you’ve certainly earned it, and thanks for all the wonderful memories that you have left for us to cherish.

Gail, Sandy and your families you will be heartbroken at the loss of your Mother, but as you grieve try to cling to this old saying that no happy times are ever really gone, if they leave lovely memories to reflect upon. We send you much love and big hugs from Brian and Sandra in Victoria, BC and our son Michael in Calgary who always drove us to many amusing visits with Elma.

Condolence from Jona Way on April 10th, 2018 5:28 PM

To the whole McLachlan Family. I had so hoped to be able to attend Elma’s celebration of life. I was saddened to read of her passing. Elma and I became friends 40 years ago when I first got into the travel industry. We worked together in CITC, Women In Travel and ACTA. I have so many fond memories of her as the industry veteran and me as the newbie. We travelled frequently with Allan and Elma to Women in Travel Conventions. And, oh the times we had. We laughed long and hard! What a fun, vibrant personality Elma was. I can’t imagine how fun she would have been to have as a mother and a grandmother. May all your happy memories sustain you through a difficult time.

Condolence from Godfrey Hudson on April 11th, 2018 10:26 AM

Condolences from Godfrey Hudson ,Toronto

To: Gail and Alex ,Sandy and Jim and all other members of the extended family of the late Elma McLachlan

Sixty-four years ago Elma was recognized as an outstanding person. That status continued throughout her productive and exemplary life.

In 1954 she was a member of the staff of a renowned radio station in Saskatoon with the call letters CFQC when its news operation was described as the best in North America.

That station had participated in a competition sponsored by the international Radio and Television News Directors Association and Northwestern University in Chicago.

Elma’s duties at that time were to serve as secretary of the very active news department and also to help build a television news photo library for CFQC as it was launching a privately owned television station– the first in Northern and Central Saskatchewan in 1954.

Her excellent work in Saskatoon was an indicator that Elma and success were perfect partners.

After she moved to Calgary she quickly became a certified travel counsellor.

Her husband Allan and her daughters– Gail and Sandy– and their spouses and their children remained the centre of her highly commendable life which also was noted for its rich sense of humor and her devotion to helping others.

Elma was always a person to be greatly admired and fondly remembered.

Condolence from Sandra Tompkins on April 12th, 2018 9:01 AM

my condolences to your family. I have many memories of Elma over the years and will be forever grateful to her for helping mold me into the travel industry. Her patience and compassion taught me to stop and do more than just smell the roses as there is beauty everywhere and in everyone.
I still have the Norman Rockwell needlepoint that she had given me may years ago which will keep her alive in my heart always.
A ray of sunshine that I am sure is now shining brightly in heaven.
