McKEE, Beatrice

May 15, 1925 – January 6, 2019
Calgary, Alberta

Beatrice McKee of Calgary, AB, passed away on Sunday, January 6, 2019 at the age of 93 years.

Born in Kostice, Czechoslovakia, Bea immigrated with her parents to Canada in 1929 at the age of 4 years. Her family settled in Southern Alberta and she grew up in a community of hard working sugar beet farmers. She left their farm in Coaldale, AB, to begin her career in retail sales in Regina, SK. While in Regina she met her husband Simon and they were married on June 16, 1951 in Lethbridge, AB. They lived in Regina for eight years where her children, Deb and Jim were born. The family moved to Calgary in 1959 and settled in the new community of Fairview. In the late 1960s, Bea started her twenty year career with the Woodward’s department store. She had many great stories and memories from her days at Woodward’s, working as the Manager of the Candy and Tobacco department at the Market Mall store. She retired in 1990 at the age of 65 years. Bea loved to be with her family, whether it was travelling to warm destinations, watching her grandchildren playing sports or just having breakfast at Phil’s. She loved to bake for her family and friends and was well known for her banana bread and apple pie. Bea always enjoyed the companionship of her grandson’s dog Kokanee, reading a good book or doing word search puzzles. Quiet and reserved on the outside but fiercely competitive at heart, she showed no mercy when playing her favorite game of Gin Rummy. Bea took great pride in the fact that she lived on her own until she was 90 and then resided until her passing at Chartwell Colonel Belcher Retirement Residence.

Beatrice is survived by her son Jim and his wife Tina McKee; daughter Debbie Mathieson; two grandsons, Scott Mathieson and Greg McKee; two granddaughters, Carly and her husband Matt Barton, and Maria McKee; and nephew Chris Henricks. She is also survived by many in-laws, nieces, and nephews living in Ontario.

She was predeceased by her husband Simon McKee; sister Ann and her husband Wes Henricks; and her mother Elizabeth Turecek.

Funeral Services will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY (Chapel of the Bells, 2720 Centre Street North, Calgary, AB), on Saturday, January 12, 2019 at 10:00 a.m. Reception to follow in the Hospitality Centre at the Funeral Home. A private family Graveside Service will be held at a later date.

She was a very special lady, and I will always remember her during my young days as neighbors in Fairview, and when I was a salesman for Rowntree, and had to visit Bea at Woodwards. Deb, Jim and families,
My deepest sympathy on the passing of your cherished Mom and Grandma. I have very fond memories of Bea from the Woodward’s days. I can still picture her in the orange uniform of the day and think of her often as I drive by your old house on Brisebois Drive. I much admired her strength and tenacity and was blessed to have known the warmth of her kinship.
