MCHARG, June Martha

May 4, 2018 – Calgary, Alberta

June McHarg (nee Lowe) of Calgary, AB, passed away peacefully in her sleep of congestive heart failure on Friday, May 4, 2018 at the age of 88 years.

June was born August 15, 1929 in Kapuskasing, ON to parents James and Ada (nee Lawrence) Lowe. She had two older brothers, Donald and James. Both of her brothers served in the Royal Canadian Air Force during WWII. They were a big influence on June.

As a young woman June moved to Toronto, ON and worked at the Sears Roebuck & Co. department store. In the mid 1940’s June skated with the Ice Capades the beginning of synchronized figure skating. June idolized Canadian figure skater, Barbara Berezowski and later in life named her own daughter Barbara. June joined the Royal Canadian Air Force and served in the forces for three years.

June moved to Saskatoon, SK in the early 1950’s where she raised a family of three girls. In Saskatoon she taught figure skating at the Lions Arena. She was also very active in her church community and church choir. In 1998 June moved to Calgary, AB to be closer to her daughters.

June had a continual interest in community service all her life. After a heart attack in 2004, June volunteered to teach a mental health workshop for Alberta Health Calgary called “Row Your Own Boat”. The course dealt with Living with a long-term health condition. In the past five years June wrote and passed her test to become an Alberta Health Care volunteer for the city of Calgary.

June is survived by her daughter Beverley (Jim) Reid and grandsons, James and Michael; her daughter Brenda and grandchildren, Jesse and Heather Wale; she is also survived by her grandson Randall (Danielle) Graham and great granddaughter Beatrix, grandson Daniel (Melanie) Graham; and great-grandsons, Joshua, Peter and Matthew; and granddaughter Alison (Jordan) Garcia.

She was predeceased by her daughter Barbara Graham (nee McHarg) who passed away in September 2003.

The family is holding a private service of Interment. She will be missed. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.
