McGUIRE, Marie-Anne Petra

February 12, 1989 – Calgary, Alberta
June 18, 2018 – Calgary, Alberta

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Marie-Anne Petra McGuire, age 29, and her infant son Oliver James McGuire on June 18th, 2018 in Calgary, AB.

Marie-Anne was a loving, compassionate, and caring woman who touched the hearts of all who met her. Born and raised in Calgary, she attended Bishop Grandin High School and the University of Calgary, where she obtained Bachelor’s Degrees in Kinesiology and Education. She taught at St. Bede and St. Sebastian Schools where young children were drawn to Marie-Anne’s warm and passionate personality. She enjoyed travelling with her soul mate Michael; whether it was short trips towards the mountains or tropical vacations. Marie-Anne was a vibrant woman who loved the outdoors, hiking, and spending time with their puppy, Guinness. Marie-Anne’s vibrancy in life was evident through her generosity and kindness for everyone she encountered. She had a style and grace that was loving and welcoming as seen throughout her home. Marie-Anne had enormous passion for those in need; she had an instinctive nature of giving to others. The importance of family was second to none in Marie-Anne’s heart. Marie-Anne was overflowing with joy to be expanding her family by becoming a mother and will be at peace with God with her newborn Oliver in her arms.

Marie-Anne is survived by her loving husband Michael McGuire; her parents, Frantiska and Drahomir Drapal; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Jana and Francisco Siller de Leon and Pavla and Ivan D’Souza; three brothers and one sister-in-law, Drahomir (Jr.) and Natalie Drapal, (Rev.) Lukas Drapal and Mark Drapal; mother-in-law Carmen Gallant (Rob Paul); father-in-law John McGuire (Noella); brother-in-law Riley McGuire and numerous nieces and nephews.

We are so devastated by the loss of Marie and little Oliver. My boys Liam and Malcolm Millar have had her as a teacher for the past three years. My son Liam said she was so beautiful like a flower. We adored her. My deepest sympathy’s to her family.

    Michael, Drapal and McGuire families,
There aren’t words to describe the pain I feel personally and the pain I feel for all of you. I had the privilege of working with Marie at St. Bede’s. It was during that time that I saw how Marie grew as a teacher and individual. It was fun to hear all the exciting stories about Michael, the purchase of a new home, the engagement proposal and ring, the planning of a wedding. Michael, her eyes sparkled when she talked about you and you knew she was madly in love with her best friend. She spoke proudly of the sacrifices her parents made as new immigrants in Canada. Her sister, brothers were so important to her and she spoke highly of everyone. I lived vicariously through her. She had a heart of gold, (which you already know) and treated each and every one of her students as her own. I will cherish all the “heart to hearts” we had and all the laughs we shared together. Heaven has gained two angels;Marie and Oliver. Sending my heartfelt condolences and prayers to all of you. I bid you farewell Bella and will see you on the other side one day.

Marie was my cousin Michael’s wife. Last summer Marie and Michael traveled to Eastern Europe to visit her family. On the way home, they stopped in Ireland. They contacted me, and came to visit me. I was so happy Michael married Marie, as she was such a ray of sunshine in our family. When they visited me in Ireland last summer we had a really nice visit. It meant so much to me that Marie and Michael took the time to visit. I found Marie to be extremely genuine, down to earth, gentle, caring, non judgmental, and happy. Everything about Marie was so genuine. She made me feel so comfortable instantly. I felt a particular connection with Marie after her and Michaels visit, and I think everyone who encountered Marie felt that. She has that affect on people. Marie talked about her love of teaching to me, and I enjoyed hearing her speak of her passion for teaching children. It was evident how in love and Happy Marie and Michael were. They spoke to me about their desire to have children in the next year. A few months after they left Ireland she announced she was pregnant. I was so so ecstatic for Marie and Michael. I thought they would be the best parents. I enjoyed following along with her pregnancy updates on social media. I am finding it difficult to make sense of this incomprehensible tragedy. Marie’s life was short, but her impact on this world was full. It is truly heart warming to see all of the messages from her students and their parents. It is a testament to the type of person Marie was. Our grandmother (who had the same name but spelled differently ) adored Marie. I take comfort in knowing Our grandmother is making sure Marie and baby Oliver are ok in heaven. Marie is a mother in heaven with baby Oliver in her arms watching down on Michael Oliver’s father and Marie’s husband, and all of her family. My deepest condolences are extended lovingly to Marie’s side of her family. Her parents and siblings, and many more. Today in Ireland we lit a candle for Marie and for Oliver at 3 o clock Irish time. We will do so on Friday night and Saturday also. My deepest condolences to my sweet cousin Michael. He is in my prayers.

    Michael,the Drapal and McGuire families,
There aren’t words to describe how shattered my heart is and how broken it feels for all that you are going through and all that you will have to go through. Marie and I worked together at St. Bede for three years. During that time, I saw her grow as an individual and into a fabulous teacher. She adored and loved her students as her own. Her face lit up when she spoke of her family, but more so when spoke of her beloved best friend and husband, Michael. Marie was so excited when they purchased their home and when Michael proposed. She was bouncing down the hallway like Tigger showing off her sparkly gem. Her enthusiasm and zest for life permeated through our building. I feel blessed to have met and worked with Marie-Ann. She has left an enormous imprint on all of us but most importantly the children she taught. I see her in my mind smiling while holding Oliver close to her heart. I send heartfelt sympathies and prayers. Rest in Peace my dear friend. I will see you one day on the other side.

My deepest sympathy to you all on the loss of my dear friend and her beautiful Oliver. Sending love from Prince Edward Island.

The staff and students at St. Sebastian school are so saddened to experience the loss of Marie and baby Oliver. Marie was so excited to become a mom. I admired her optimism and strength during her difficult pregnancy. She wanted to be there for her students as long as she could. She was a dedicated, passionate teacher and a beautiful person inside and out. It brings us comfort knowing that she is in heaven with her baby boy. We will feel her spirit in our school and we will see you again someday Marie. Sending prayers and lots of love to her family and friends.

She was so excited to be bringing little Oliver into the world. As a mother of four, she would tell me often how blessed she felt I was. My deepest condolences to all of the loved ones of Marie and Oliver McGuire and all affected by their tragic passing.

My husband Matthew, is a Grade Three teacher at St. Sebastian and my son Asher and I had the blessing of getting to briefly know Marie over that time. Marie was always warm, kind, welcoming-truly beautiful inside and out, and it was so heartwarming to see how excited she was when Asher and I came by for visits. It was so obvious how much she desired and was excited for motherhood and how perfectly suited she was for it. While I haven’t met her husband, I know God handpicked the most perfect parents for baby Oliver and it deeply saddens me that such a rare and heartbreaking tragedy took the lives of two precious people, but I, like many, know Oliver is in the most perfect place; his mother’s arms in Heaven.
My thoughts and prayers are with her loved ones during this impossibly difficult time, and that they find the love, support and healing they need as they navigate their journey of grief.

Though it’s been many years since our high-school choir days, I can still hear Marie-Anne’s contagious (soprano-pitched) giggle and feel her soothing hugs. Never a bad word to say about anyone, I will always remember her as the thoughtful and infinitely charismatic person she was.

To Michael: Albeit from our younger years, I remember you having a great sense of humour, being in touch with your emotions and being resilient. I hope that with time, those admirable traits of yours guide your journey from grief to light.

I am so deeply saddened to hear of Marie-Anne and Oliver’s passing. This experience has impacted me in ways I could never express. Sending the entire Drapal and McGuire families all my love.
