McGrath, Dr. John V.M.

December 10, 2018 – Calgary, Alberta

John Vincent Michael MD, FRCOG (I), FRCOG (C), died on December 10, 2018 at the age of 83 years.

Born May 15, 1935 in Manchester, England. John attended Trinity College Dublin, Ireland where he received his medical degree. He arrived in Canada December 1967 where he continued to practice as an obstetrician and gynaecologist in Saskatchewan and Calgary. For most of his career John practiced in Calgary at Holy Cross, Grace, Foothills and Rockyview Hospitals.

John was a dedicated physician, husband, father and grandfather. His family was of utmost importance to him and he was always available to listen, give advice and lend a helping hand. He was avid sportsman and loved golf, tennis, skiing and squash.

John is survived by his loving wife of 34 years, Kathryn (mother Patricia, brother Scott) and his four children, Karen, Mark (Diana), Andrew and Paul and their mother Valerie McGrath, as well as his 10 beloved grandchildren. John leaves behind in England two sisters, Maureen (John) Moody, Shelagh (Andrew) Bethel, sister-in-law Jane McGrath together with many nieces, nephews and their families.

Fondly remembered by friends, colleagues, former patients and his beloved four legged companion “Clouseau”.

John was affectionately referred to by some as a “A paragon of Virtue” to which he would laugh out loud!

Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Holy Spirit Catholic Church (10827 – 24th Street S.W., Calgary, AB) on Friday, December 14, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. Reception to follow in the Parish Hall.  Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.

    So sorry to hear of the loss of your husband, father and grandfather. I worked with Dr. McGrath for many years at both the Holy Cross and then the Rockyview. He was always so kind to the nurses he worked with, and his patients thought the world of him.

    So sorry to hear about your father. I worked with him for many years. He loved to write his orders in Latin which I could translate. No one else knew what he wrote.He just laughed when he saw their perplexed expressions.He was so pleasant to work with and his patients just afford him.Bless you all at this time.
