December 3, 1988 – Calgary, Alberta
January 16, 2019 – Calgary, Alberta
Nicholas McCormick of Calgary, AB, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, January 16, 2019 at the age of 30 years.
Nicholas was surrounded by his loved ones in the days before his passing. He was born in Calgary, AB and grew up with a loving family. Everyone who knew him was touched by his kind heart, and his absolutely brilliant mind. During his teenage years Nicholas cultivated a number of online friendships stretching across North America, and as far as Ireland. These friendships would continue to grow, with some of these friends visiting in his final days. Nicholas attended the University of Calgary, where he studied and gained a B.A. in English Literature. In his late twenties Nicholas’s father Mitchell battled serious health problems and Nick was there every step of the way, becoming his father’s caregiver after surgery and hospital stays. Nicholas loved to write, and wrote a number of short stories that gained a great deal of popularity on the internet. Despite some discomfort, Nicholas displayed an unequaled patience and compassion for others, and never gave up his belief that people were fundamentally good. He was always eager to discuss his current topic of interest, be it popular culture, intellectual writings, politics or his beloved dog, Theo. Generous to his very core, Nicholas would often go out of his way to find special gifts specially chosen for the people in his life, which never failed to make the recipient’s smile.
Nicholas is survived by his mother, Penelope Abernethy; sisters, Samantha Le Fey (Lisa Jurykovsky), and Sacha (Matt Hammer); grandfather Bill McCormick; aunts Shannon Hallet (nee McCormick) and cousin Ethan, Irene MacCaull, uncles Fred Abernethy (Barb), Leagh Roberts, as well as many cousins, extended family and friends.
Nicholas is predeceased by his father Mitchell McCormick.

This is the saddest news. I am broken hearted for my family. The line from Stary Night was the first thing that came to mind. “This world was never meant for one as beautiful as you”
He had such a brilliant mind and soft heart. I will miss him terribly
