McCLEAN, Terrance “Terry”

January 17, 1951 – Lethbridge, Alberta
July 21, 2018 – Calgary, Alberta

The ad read “Help Wanted – Qualified individual to run the Control Room/Gates. Please apply to Saint Peter at the Pearly Gates”. Knowing that he was the most qualified, Terry McClean left us on July 21st, 2018 to run the buttons at the age of 67 years old.

Terry McClean was born on January 17, 1951 to James Callaghan McClean and Joan Ollenbittle. After spending his early years in Lethbridge, the family relocated to Calgary when Terry was 12 years old. In 1975, Terry married Linda; they purchased their first home in Forest Heights where they raised their children and grandchildren. Terry spent years going through various jobs before he finally found his calling. In July 1975, Terry became a Correctional Officer at Calgary Correction Center (Spyhill). Terry was a proud member of The Blue Line, he became a strong AUPE member, a member of the first TAC Team in Alberta, and a mentor to numerous new officers. After forty-one (plus) years, Terry retired as a COII to spend more time with family, but his heart always remained with The Blue Line.

Terry loved his family, and they were always his number one priority. He spent several years (spanning two generations) coaching baseball and hockey. One of Terry’s fondest memories was in November 2017 when he and his great-grandson Evan made a special trip for ten days to Mexico, a trip that meant the world to Terry and made him smile through his courageous battle with cancer.

Terry is survived by his children, Karla Hansen-McClean, Rory McClean (Jody), Christa McClean-Leigh (Tony), and Russel Wikeruk (Kristin); grandchildren, Courtney McClean-Bird (Darren), Destin McClean, James McClean (Olivia), Alyssa Croke, Teale Leigh, Declan McClean, and Austin Croke; great-grandchildren, Donovan Bird, Evan McClean-Coderre, Elsey Bird, Ireland McClean-Reid, and Khloee Bird; his siblings, Pat Hanson, Doug McClean (Patty), and Linda McClean; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and bonus grandkids whom he loved dearly.

He was predeceased by his wife, Linda Ruth Fontaine and his sister, Margaret “Peggy” Chambers.

Those wishing to pay their respects to the family may do so at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY (Chapel of the Bells, 2720 Centre Street North, Calgary, AB) on Wednesday, July 25, 2018 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.

Funeral Services will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY (Chapel of the Bells, 2720 Centre Street North, Calgary, AB), on Thursday, July 26, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. Reception to follow at the funeral home. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. The family would like to thank Dr. Ted Jablonski, Dr. Lee Ying, Unit 61 and 47 at the Foothills Hospital, along with the staff at Calgary Palliative Home Care for the support and care given to Terry these last few months. The family would also like to extend a special thank you to Paul Sellars, Ed Richardson, and Ken Cutrell for being honorary members of our family and for the special care and love that they extended to dad, and on behalf of dad.

In living memory of Terry McClean, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Chapel of the Bells, 2720 CENTRE STREET NORTH, CALGARY, AB, T2E 2V6, Telephone: 403-276-2296.

Terry (Big T) was a great CO and an average bowler. He showed his dedication to the job when he ratched up his knee and arranged “light duties” (button-pushing in main control) for a month. His sense of humor was unsurpassed but when it was time to be serious T was there too. We will miss you Buddy.

Terry a heart of gold, strong of commitnent and quick to help. Mentor, solicitor and protector. Jioning CCC i soon learned who to talk to get advise or counsel on situations. As a manager you knew where Terry stood, and not akways on my side. I respected the man and what he did for others. Terry can rest now, his shift is over. God bless.
