November 3rd : Its 4:00 am & I am saying goodbye the best way I know. Writing what I am thinking, what I’m remembering from a childhood that seems, now, suddenly, a long, long time ago.

Auntie Joan was short, really short. I’d joke that I was born @ 6 foot, she may have been an inch short of five, (though as she got older I suspect she shrunk a little) with this strong Barbadian accent & a shock of white hair, never without her glasses, seldom without a task @ hand, ‘busy as a bee’. A cheery grin & crinkled eyes. Thats my auntie Joan in my minds’ eye, right there.

More jumbled memories rushing in.

Her family & her religion the main reason for each day, determined to pack 26 hours in, which she did, up & down those steps in Hillside avenue, Cascade, hanging endless wet towels on the line & checking on whatever sailing boat was currently being repaired under their house.

A voice full of love, she’d end each sentence with ‘dear’.
And she was. To me, my tiny auntie Joan, the mother of my dear school friend Carol Ann, she was the ultimate dear.

There were all these photographs of her eldest children & grandchildren on the piano in the living room. A distant reminder that she had a life away from here I knew nothing of, perhaps waiting for her to be done here? And away she did go, all of them, Andrew to Australia, her girls to Canada, all back to the other older children after uncle Frankie’s death.

Each year or two she’d come home to Trinidad from Calgary to visit, @ 70. Then @ 80, sure enough she was back @ 90.
I used to think Calgary was just too far to go.
She didn’t think Trinidad was too far to come.

Auntie Joan, if I could I would tell you again how much I appreciated your kindness & generousity to this country ‘bookie’ staying in town all those years ago. I felt your arms always open to me, a bed made up no matter when or what. I wonder now…where on earth did Wendy sleep when I arrived in my BAHS uniform on a Friday aftrnoon expecting to be welcomed until Monday? Why did I just barge in? And why on earth did you allow me to do so!

I can just imagine the sadness your girls are feeling without their busy body mummy. The silence without your presence must be deafening.

RIP Joan Mayers, you must be exhausted with those 26 hour days. You deserve some time alone now with uncle Frankie, sailing & ‘busy bodying’ on the seas.

To her family, truth be told I felt you were my family too. Thank you all for allowing me to be one of hers as well.
I will never forget your mother as long as I live, she will always be in my heart.

Condolence from kathryn Stollmeyer Wight on November 5th, 2016 11:55 PM

I’d like to forward another appreciation of auntie Joan’s life, this time from the secretary of the Trinidad & Tobago Sailing Association, James Arrindell.

Dear Members,

It is with great sadness that I inform you of the passing of Joanie Mayers, “Auntie Joanie” to most of us. As all will know she was the wife of “Frankie” Mayers, the famed boat builder of the locally designed and built Kingfish.

To every great man there is often a far greater woman that allows him to shine and Joanie was that person. She was the one who stepped in and supported Frankie in the building of the Kingfish by sewing all the sails that were needed in the 150 plus boats that were built. This was at a time when there were no boat supply stores and often one had to either build your own or order from overseas.

She was his greatest friend and strongest supporter and with Frankie you needed to be up for anything. For example, the time they were out day sailing along the north Coast and seeing a favourable wind set spinnaker, sailed north to Tobago were they stayed for the rest of the week.

She will be missed by us all and leaves to morn her five children Richard, Helen, Ann, Andy and Wendy.

She died peacefully on Saturday October 29, 2016 at 7:05p.m., surrounded by her loving children and family.

James Arrindell

Condolence from J & P on November 13th, 2016 12:33 PM

Jennifer and I are very sad to learn of Auntie Joan’s passing. She was a
wonderful person and we know you will really miss her.

Condolence from R.P. on November 13th, 2016 12:42 PM

Auntie Joan was really such a special lady and I feel so privileged to have spent almost every day of my young life in her home, where I never felt like I was imposing, even though having an extra child in her home everyday must have been just that – an imposition.

Know you must be sad now, but the line of the poem she loved has to console us…

“You can cry and close your mind, be empty and turn your back,
or you can do what she’d want: smile, open your eyes, love and go on”

Condolence from D.C. on November 13th, 2016 12:44 PM

Please accept my deepest sympathy as you grieve and mourn the loss of your wonderful mother.

Auntie Joan was an amazing lady with a love for life. Her smiles and laughter, her positive outlook are all very vivid to me – a real blessing to all she met.

May her soul rest in eternal peace

Condolence from S&W on November 13th, 2016 12:44 PM

I sit here shedding a few tears and with such a heavy heart thinking about Joanie. She was such a sweet lady and I know that she thought the world of you all, and was very grateful for all you did for her. I know, because she told me so on many occasions throughout the years. Should we have all been so lucky to have such a relationship with our own Mother and Mother in laws. Please pass on my condolences, and let me know if there is anything I can do for you and the family. I know that things will be very busy for you all in the next few days.
Much love,

Condolence from C&R on November 13th, 2016 12:46 PM

So very sorry to hear of the death of Joan. Please give my sympathy to the family; I think that some of your family will remember me from 2008 when I visited with Sylvia and Albert, in the days when she was very much alive. I know that her loss will leave a great gap, but I know from experience that recalling happy times is a great healer. With love to you all,

What an amazing human being she truly was!! An absolute role model to all who had the privilege to be a part of her life. For sure, my formative years were enriched by her being so involved and I will forever be eternally grateful.

May God grant her the eternal peace she so richly deserves. And may you all cherish, (and more importantly continue) her wonderful legacy.

Condolence from J&D on November 13th, 2016 1:22 PM

Words seem so inadequate at a time like this but they will have to do as we are so far away!

I really wish we were closer right now to share your sorrow and all the wonderful stories of your mum. We are thinking of you all and praying for you.

Aunty Joanie was a special soul and we are so lucky to have grown up down the road from her. Her positive attitude, generosity and boundless energy made her wonderful to be around, and that went for all ages. My boys loved her as well and send their thoughts and best wishes.

John and I are so happy that we were able to stop off in Calgary and you were all such generous and kind hosts and A Joanie was in great form.

We will miss her and share your sorrow at this time. I’m sure she was lifted by angels and continues to smile on us.

Love and blessings to you all at this tough time.

Dear All family,

I was so sorry to receive this sad news. But, as you say she went peacefully and with all you lovely family around her, and knowing she had such a long and fulfilling life, perhaps it is not so sad. I know you will all miss her and I do send you my condolences. I regard myself lucky to have been one of her many friends. I have happy memories of sailing in Trinidad and of visiting your house there on many occasions.

Again, my best thoughts go out to you all.

Condolence from P&A on November 13th, 2016 1:36 PM

We were very sad to hear the news of Auntie Joanie’s passing and want you both to know that one of the reasons why she lived such a long and happy life was the love and excellent care that you both gave her. Hilda had called to tell us that she was not well and was in hospital, but that she could still joke with her last Wednesday. She really was an amazing person and we were always impressed with how good her memory was and how she could recall all sorts of details about people and events. We love the verse you shared with us and will keep you both and all your family in our thoughts and prayers.

Lots of love

Condolence from Hilary Sadler on January 6th, 2017 10:21 PM

I knew Auntie Joan from a young child growing up in Trinidad, my parents and Uncle Frank and Auntie Joan were good friends, Helen was closest to my age, and we attended childrens birthday parties. I moved to Toronto in 1971, and then very close friends of mine moved to Calgary in the nineteen eighties, can’t remember the exact date, but whenever I came to Calgary I always visited Auntie Joan at Ann and Wendy’s home, and they welcomed my visits, and Auntie Joan and I had many laughs and wonderful chats from the past and she was truly an amazing woman. We will miss her but know she is now at peace and with her beloved husband Frank.
