MAYER, Shirley Anne (nee Sigurdson)

September 18, 1947 – Gimli, Manitoba
July 4, 2019 – Calgary, Alberta

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Shirley Anne Mayer, of Calgary, AB, at the age of 71 after a brief but courageous battle with cancer. She passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family, in the evening of Thursday, July 4, 2019.

Shirley will always be remembered for her kind loving heart, selflessness and strong work ethic. She took great pride in her work, her family, and especially her grandchildren. She will be dearly missed by everyone who knew her. Shirley was born September 18, 1947 in Gimli, MB, the first of ten children to Doris and Sigurjon in a close-knit and loving family. She grew up a farm-girl, attending Laufas School and finished high school at the Arborg Collegiate. Shirley came from a hardworking family, who were proud of their Icelandic and English heritage. She married her first husband, Lynn Hokanson, at a young age and became a mother to James and Murray. The family moved to Thompson, MB, in the late sixties and then to Calgary in 1971. While maintaining a home and raising her boys, she later took night classes for accounting, which would become her lifelong career alongside being a mother. Shirley worked for various accounting firms in Calgary, where she met the loving man who would become her second husband, Wally, whom she eloped with in Hawaii. Wally brought two daughters of his own to the family, Michelle and Veronica. Soon after, Shirley and Wally had a son, Shane. During this time, Shirley was happy working, being a mother, and soon took on what was one of her favourite roles in life; being a grandmother. Shirley spent her years enjoying large family gatherings, taking trips with family to places like BC, Las Vegas, Hawaii and Alaska, as well as spending hours talking on the phone with her sisters and friends. She loved to listen and people-watch, exchange news of the many goings-on in the family and share a laugh with those she loved.

Shirley is survived by her sons, James (Kathy), Murray (Robin), and Shane (Andie); step-daughters, Michelle (Matt) and Veronica (Chris); grandchildren, Jesse, Ethan, Sydney, Jaina, Lewis, Tim, and Violet; her siblings, John (Bev), Reggie (Kim), Irene, Linda (Ken), Frank, Kathy (Brian), Jeff (Jinny), and Ron (Yana); as well as the many cousins, nieces, nephews and their children in her extended family.

She was predeceased by her beloved husband Wally; her father Sigurjon; her mother Doris; her sister Joan; her infant brother Leslie, and her step-father Donnie.

A Celebration of Life will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY (Crowfoot, 82 Crowfoot Circle NW, Calgary, AB) on Saturday, July 13, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. Reception to follow in the Hospitality Centre at the Funeral Home. Graveside Service to follow at a later date in Geysir, MB.
