MATTHEIS, Anna

June 25, 1929 – Brestowaz, Yugoslavia
April 22, 2018 – Calgary, Alberta

We have lost our wonderful Mother, Oma and Great Oma, Anna Mattheis. Anna passed away peacefully on April 22nd, 2018 at the care home in Calgary.

She was born on June 25, 1928 in Yugoslavia. After the war she immigrated to Canada and then sponsored her parents so the family could be together. Through hard work they bought a house together on Ave. F. South in Saskatoon. Mom met dad at the Bessborough Park and they were married soon after. She worked at the German Concordia club as a cook for many years. She was well known for the delicious meals she would cook at the club and at home. Mom enjoyed The German Club with her friends visiting and singing. She was part of the choir and the ladies group.

Mom eventually moved to Shuswap Lake in British Columbia with dad where they lived for a number of years. Eventually they moved to Calgary because of dad’s health. Mom had a stroke shortly after that and dad passed away about the same time in 2009. Mom still functioned well after the stroke and lived a comfortable life with most of her family close by

Mom loved her children and grandchildren and was a loving and wonderful woman. We will all miss her. She is survived by her children Ingrid (Rick) Welsh, Rita (Dave) Shaw, Reinhold (Sherri) Mattheis and Herb (Shannon) Mattheis and seven grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. Predeceased by her Husband Helmut Mattheis, Mother and Father Elisabeth and Franz Schwarz.

A celebration of Anna’s life will be held at a later date. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.

In living memory of Anna Mattheis, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Deerfoot South, 12281 – 40th STREET S.E., Calgary, AB T2Z 4E6, Telephone: 403-203-0525.

  2. Kathy Rhoden :

I was so very sorry to learn of your mom’s passing. I first met your mom through my late husband, Dean, who was a member of the Concordia Club in Saskatoon and a huge fan of your mom’s cooking skills! In addition to her being a wonderful cook, she was also very caring, thoughtful and a delight to spend time with. I can still picture her smile.

My deepest sympathy to your and yours.
    Kathy Rhoden

My heartfelt condolences to the whole family. I had visited Anna at the Care Centre for the past four years or so and we developed a wonderful friendship. Your mother, oma, great-oma was a beautiful soul. Unfortunately, my husband and I were away during the last few weeks of Anna’s life and beyond and I just found out today about her passing when I went to visit her. If there hasn’t been a memorial service yet, will someone please email me to let me know when it will be so I can attend. I would appreciate that very much.
