MATKALUK , Stephen John

1928 – 2018

We lost a good man today. In his 90th year, Stephen John Matkaluk, drilling man extraordinaire, passed away peacefully on February 8, 2018. Stephen was raised in Cochrane, AB, and left home at the age of 17 to chase rigs in the burgeoning oil industry when derricks were made of wood and men were made of steel. He was an adventuresome soul and a trail blazer, who endured many hardships that were overcome with relentless tenacity and hard work. Dad and Gramps was our ordinary hero. He was kind, gentle, shy, sort of complicated and a man of few words who led by example. He was predeceased by Irene, his loving wife of 60 years, and will be forever remembered and always loved and cherished by the Matkaluks in Calgary (Randy, Linda and Stephanie) and Vancouver (Darryl, Tate, Kit and Rebecca).
Stephen’s life will be celebrated at a private family service on a warm and sunny spring day.

Our sincere appreciation goes to the staff at Mayfair Care Centre for their kind and compassionate care. Condolences may be forwarded through

In living memory of Stephen Matkaluk, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Park Memorial, 5008 ELBOW DRIVE S.W. Calgary, AB, T2S 2L5, Telephone: 403-243-8200.

  3. I true gentlemen. Kind and generous the Matkaluk’s opened there home and hearts to us on so many occasions. Some of my earliest memories are of fun and games in the @ Matkaluk manner. Weekend trips from Edmonton with Mary-Lou and my brother Brad always meant great times. Ed recalls one tough s.o.b who worked his way to the top the old school way, tower shift after tower shift. Real life experiences and great people skills made him a living. Gut instincts being and a man of his word made him a legend. Heart felt condolences to his family and those who knew him. The Clint’s Edward, Brad and Kendall.
