MARTIN, Erma Helene (nee Peters)

January 23, 1928 – Didsbury, Alberta
September 7, 2018 – Calgary, Alberta

Erma Helene Martin (nee Peters) passed away peacefully in the early hours of September 7, 2018 at the age of 90.

She was born January 23, 1928 in Didsbury, fourth child of five, and lived her entire life a citizen of Alberta.

Erma was cultured, private, dry-witted, wildly impractical, often nonsensical, but above all, fiercely independent. As a child, she was known to daydream with the animals in the pasture – later in life she spoke longingly about wanting to live with the bears. She studied nursing at St. Boniface School of Nursing in Winnipeg; her career spanned almost 40 years, with duties ranging from psychiatric wards to specialized care. Her passion for the outdoors spawned multiple backyard gardens which she designed and created herself. Another specialty of hers was road trips to the mountains – either taken alone or with any nearby hapless offspring. As always, they involved zero planning.

She married Fred Martin in 1959 and raised 5 children, each not much more than a year apart, all while maintaining her full time nursing career. She loved her children, throwing out whatever would stick – music lessons, hockey, figure skating, art classes, lacrosse, tennis and more. With her attention to detail, it was virtually assured her children would grow up to be independent as well (!)
Later in life, Erma enjoyed the company of her many grandchildren and continued to be active. In the summer of her 80th year, she went on a 3 hour trek through the woods, with son, daughter-in-law and grandson in tow. They all got lost, encountered streams, cliffs, bugs … but in the end, she slept well. She was always in good health for her age and maintained a spunky, humorous character to the very end. She was a true free spirit and will be always remembered for her quirky habits, her wit, and her love of nature.

Erma is survived by her five children: Charlotte (Dale), Cameron (Leslie), Dean (Anda), David (Jacquie) and Sharon; as well as 6 grandchildren: Ashley, Rebecca, Kelsey, Melissa, Benet and Jake. She is survived also by her brother Dan (Barb).
