MARKLUND, Eugene Anders

January 14, 1931 – Lucky Lake, Saskatchewan
May 24, 2018 – Calgary, Alberta

Gene passed away peacefully on May 24, 2018 at the age of 87 years.

Gene was born on January 14, 1931 in Lucky Lake, SK (he often joked the community got its name because he was born there). He grew up in Weirdale, SK with his three big brothers and his ‘baby sister’. Flying was always Gene’s passion and he spent many years “in the left seat”, first with the RCAF (his ‘first love’ was the PBY “Canso”) then with Trans-Canada Airlines (now Air Canada). His flying adventures were many and his family always could count on hearing about some harrowing flying story years after the fact, events that should have ended in disaster but never did. He always had the most amazing flying stories.

Gene married his high school sweetheart, Marjorie, in 1954 and together they had four children. Ultimately flying gave way to a more “grounded” occupation in oil in gas, working in sales and marketing, and commercial real estate for Texaco Canada. Upon retirement, Gene enjoyed time with his wife, his children and grandchildren, tending to his beautiful yard and volunteering with the Special Olympics. He’ll always be remembered for his loyalty, sense of humor and his genuine love of family.

Left to honor Gene and remember his love and kindness are his wife of 64 years, Marjorie; children Patti, Marni, Brett (Cathy) and Lori; his grandchildren Kristyn, Sean, Kelsey and Cale; his sister June (Bas) Adam; sister-in-law May and many nieces and nephews.
Gene was predeceased by his parents Albin and Georgina and brothers Ivar, Gilbert and Vern.

As per Gene’s request, no funeral will be held.

The family wishes to thank the staff of the AgeCare Midnapore and Rockyview General Hospital for helping Gene and his family during his final journey.
