MALLABONE, Viola (Vi) Elisabeth (nee Egland)

April 10, 1926 – September 24, 2018

Vi Mallabone of Calgary, AB, passed away on Monday, September 24, 2018 at the age of 92 years.

Vi was the beloved wife and best friend of Howard Mallabone for over 40 years. She is survived by her son Guy and his wife Joan and their children Katherine and son-in-law Terry, and Heather; her daughter Kelly and her husband Kevin Reeves and their children Taylor, Dakota, and Jesse; and her son Ward and his wife Carol and their children Sam, Charlie, and Maggie. Vi is also survived by her sister-in-law Sheila Maxwell and brother-in-law William Svrcek, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Vi was pre-deceased by her husband Howard Mallabone, and parents Lars Egland and Marie (nee Swenson) Egland of Norway.

Vi was born on April 10, 1926 in Strathmore, Alberta. She left the family farm to work in administrative roles in Calgary and later San Francisco. During a visit home from California she met the love of her life on a blind date – Howard Mallabone. This was the beginning of a very loving and happy marriage that was full of laughter, love, friendships, travel, golfing and most important family. Vi was active in the community volunteering with the Junior League, the Samaritan Club, and the Rotary Ann’s. For many years she worked as a successful real estate agent – consistently ranked as one of the top agents in the city, while also managing a busy household. Following Howard’s death in 1996, she rediscovered her creative passion for painting and produced numerous works of art which she shared with family and friends. Vi’s greatest love however, was spending time with her husband, children, grandchildren, granddogs, and friends. Vi will be sadly missed but never forgotten by her family and many friends, whom she loved very much.

A private Funeral Service will be held for the family. In addition a Celebration of Life for the family and friends will be held at The Calgary Glencoe Club (636 29 Ave S.W, Calgary, AB) on Monday, October 8, 2018 at 12:00 p.m to 3:00 p.m. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.

The family wishes to thank the nurses and staff at Staywell Manor for the wonderful care provided to Viola over the years.

In living memory of Viola Mallabone, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Park Memorial, 5008 Elbow Drive S.W., Calgary, AB, T2S 2L5, Telephone: 403-243-8200.

  12. Vi & Howard became friends when we all joined El conquistador Golf club in Tucson. My mother remarked on her beauty. I enjoyed golfing with her she was proud of her hole in one. Her greatest joy was her grandchildren and her artistic talent took off as she painted portraits of them. Best wishes to all of you, Vi will be missed.

  16. Guy and Joni:

Family gatherings will be a little less bright without the beauty and elegance that Vi always brought to these events, yet one only has to look around the room to see her true legacy. There will be a glimmer of mother and grandmother reflected in mannerisms, smiles, twinkles of the eye reflected through each child and grandchild. Vi accomplished so much and was indeed a trailblazer of her generation a quality that will also be reflected in all of her grandchildren as their lives unfold.

May your memories hold you and bring you comfort knowing that she was well loved and cared for.

    In sympathy,

    Morgan Chetty & Val Hoey
