MAH, Kwok Ying

July 5, 1928 – Toishan, Guangdong, China
November 1, 2018 – Calgary, Alberta

Kwok Ying Mah of Calgary, passed away peacefully on Thursday, November 1, 2018 at the age of 90 years.

Ying was an educated young man who grew up in China and immigrated to Canada in 1951 to build a better life for his family. He worked many jobs in many cities; from a pulp mill in Port Alice, BC, to small cafes in Taber, AB, and Rosetown, SK. He worked hard to support his family and in 1965, he had saved enough money to return to Hong Kong and bring his family to Canada. They eventually settled in Regina, SK, to start a grocery business and raise their three children – Tony, Ed, and Shirley. For the next twenty-eight years, Ying and Tsui would work twelve-hour days, seven days a week at their grocery store, named Ying’s Lucky Dollar Store. This local family business was a favorite meeting place for friends and neighbors, Ying always greeted everyone with a warm smile and a cup of fresh coffee.

Ying and Tsui, modeled and instilled a hard work ethic in their children whom they were able to put through college. They believed that if they worked hard, then each generation after would have an easier and better life. They retired in 1994 and were able to travel before Tsui passed away in 2001. Ying moved to Calgary in 2006 to be near his family, especially his oldest son, Tony and his family.

Ying was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. When he wasn’t spending time with his family, he enjoyed watching professional sports, especially hockey and football. He also loved to cook and gather family and friends for a meal. As he got older, he took every opportunity to show his love and appreciation by hosting and treating family and friends to dinner at his favorite restaurants. Ying was a kind, gentle, and loving man who always put others ahead of himself. One month before his death, he accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior.

Ying leaves a wonderful legacy behind and he is survived by his three children, Tony (Faye), Edward (Erica), and Shirley (Steve); nine grandchildren, Bernie (Janice), Calvin, Lisa, Michelle (Garrett), Jeremy, Bradley, Ariana, Caitlin, and Christian; and two great-grandchildren, Renzo and Rina. He is also survived by special family friends, David Quon and Robert and Mary Kwong.

Ying is predeceased by his loving wife, Tsui Tao Mah in 2001; sister, Soon How Wong in 2014; and twin sister, Bik King Woo in 2017. He is also predeceased by his best lifelong friend, Ben Quon in 1999.
